And as long as you support the Mar Thoma Cross, like all the other claver supporters, you will never be able to see the forest which stands for “the secret of the kingdom of God” (Mk. 4:11). To avoid being misunderstood as an arrogant brother, I must explain here an eternal truth not only for your benefit but also for the benefit of all the other claver addicts like His Excellency Bishop Powathil, His Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath and others.
This article is my response to the allegations that you raised in response to my previous article titled “Pippiladan Is Preaching a Different Gospel”. I hope this response will put to rest all your arguments and counterarguments in this regard. First of all let me thank you for taking the time to point out where I have misquoted the Bible. I have to admit that I have not tried to verify if what you say is true or not. My reason for not attempting any such verification is that it would be counterproductive to do that in the interest of time both on your part and on the part of the other readers of this blog. With that said, let me get on the subject.
What triggered my previous article was your support of the Mar Thoma Cross based on the advice of Gamaliel, the long-time mentor of Paul. Without getting into the merits and demerits of Gamaliel’s advice, let us see what Paul had to say on the knowledge that he gained from Gamaliel after he met Jesus Christ. As you may know, Paul was a disciple of Gamaliel for many years. What did Paul think of all the knowledge he acquired sitting at the footsteps of this Jewish Rabbi? Commenting on it, in Phil. 3:7 he says: “Whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish.” Here when he says ‘all things’ he also includes the knowledge that he gained from Gamaliel. In other words, after he met Christ he came to the realization that the time he invested in gaining all that knowledge from Gamaliel was of absolutely no use at all. It all amounted to nothing but rubbish.
Pippiladan, you are in the same boat as Paul was before he met Christ. That is why you are marketing the ‘Mar Thoma Cross’ and other paraphernalia connected with this idolatrous ‘cross’ thinking that it is of any value. No wonder you value so much the advice of Gamaliel because you haven’t yet met the Savior, Jesus Christ. Your eyes are also covered with scales just as the eyes of Paul were when he was racing towards Damascus to take all the Christians as prisoners and take them to Jerusalem. We read about his spiritual blindness in Acts 9:17-18: “Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, … has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again.” Only after these scales fell off did he realize that the advice he gained from Gamaliel was all rubbish.
Pippiladan, whenever you hear the Word of God or even when you preach it to others, your eyes remain covered with the same scales that once blinded Paul. Brother, please do not take this as my personal attack on you because by exposing your spiritual blindness, I am only trying to expose the spiritual blindness of everyone like you who endorses the ‘Mar Thoma Cross’. As long as you are unwilling to obey the command of Jesus Christ in Jn. 3:14 where He asks us to “lift up the Son of Man just as Moses raised the bronze serpent in the desert”, the scales which make you blind remain. You may see every tree around you (you may know a lot of theology) but you will never see the forest even though you may be standing in the middle of the forest itself. Now let me share an eternal truth with you which is given by Jesus in Mt. 11:27: “No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.” The reason for the scales that cover your eyes is the fact that you are living in open rebellion with the only Son of the Father who alone can reveal to you who God is. As long as you are determined to market your idol, the ‘Mar Thoma Cross’, your rebellion remains and the Son will have nothing to do with you because He does not want to do business with rebellious children. He gives the Holy Spirit to only those who obey God (Acts 5:32). Receiving the Holy Spirit is a pre-condition to understanding the Word of God. Even if I am able to take each and every verse that you accuse me of misquoting in my articles and prove you wrong, it will be absolutely of no use unless the Son decides to give you the Holy Spirit. By my explaining every verse in the Bible, you may see and recognize every tree in the forest, but you will still miss view of the forest.
In Prov. 11:3 we read: “the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity”. If you are supporting the keeping of the ‘Mar Thoma Cross’ on one side of the sanctuary and the Crucifix on the other side, it is not going to work with God. God cannot tolerate duplicity of heart or loyalty towards the Crucifix and towards the ‘Mar Thoma Cross’ which is nothing but an idol. By supporting both the Mar Thoma Cross and the Crucifix both at the same time using the advice of Gamaliel as a basis, you are being unfaithful and you will be destroyed as we read in Prov. 11:3.
You must make a commitment to the Crucifix and to the Crucifix alone so that the Son may be pleased with you. Only then will the scales from your eyes fall off and you will be able to see the forest also along with the trees. Until you make such a commitment, like Paul, you will be marketing the ‘Mar Thoma Cross’ idol as a faithful agent of Satan and you will be damned for all eternity. The gospel that you preach will be one different from the Gospel preached by Jesus and the Apostles of Jesus. In this case, your fate is sealed as we read in Gal. 1:8: “they [you] are eternally condemned.” Jesus will keep you from seeing the forest which stands for the principles of salvation contained in His Word. You may see all the trees in the forest even with the greatest clarity possible. But it will only remain as head knowledge. That is why Jesus said in Mt. 5:21: “… unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” We saw above what Paul thought of the knowledge he received from Gamaliel. Here we see what Jesus thought about what Gamaliel had to offer. So He gives us the warning – to enter the kingdom of heaven, our standard of righteousness should exceed that of Gamaliel, even though he was a renowned Pharisee. Brother Pippiladan, what you need is not a ton of theology (view of lots of trees) but an ounce of obedience.

മാര് തോമ കുരിശു വിശുദ്ധ കുര്ബാനയെക്കാളും വിശുദ്ധമോ?
ടെക്സാസിസില് താമസിക്കുന്ന എന്റെ ഒരു സ്നേഹിതന് ഒരിക്കല് വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചെറുപ്പം മുതല് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു എന്ന് കരുതിയിരുന്ന അപ്പന് ആണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു ഒരാള് ഒരിക്കല് വീട്ടിലെത്തി. ചെറുപ്പത്തില് അമ്മയെയും മക്കളെയും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു പോയ ആളാണ്. എന്റെ സ്നേഹിതന് ഇയാളെ കണ്ട ഓര്മ പോലും ഇല്ല. അമ്മ ആണെങ്കില് മരിച്ചും പോയി. അയാളെ കണ്ടു പരിചയം ഉള്ളവര് ആരും ഇല്ല താനും. എങ്കിലും അപ്പന് ആകാം എന്ന വിശ്വാസത്തില് അയാളെ കൂടെ താമസിപ്പിച്ചു . കുറെ നാള് കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള് അപ്പന് ആയി വന്ന ആള് തന്റെ അധികാരം എടുക്കാന് തുടങ്ങി. വീട്ടില് വഴക്കായി. അധികം താമസിയാതെ അപ്പനെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു വലിഞ്ഞു കേറി വന്ന ആളെ വീട്ടില് നിന്നും ഇറക്കി വിട്ടപ്പോള് സമാധാനം ആയി. ഇതേ പോലത്തെ സംഭവം വേറൊരിടത്തു നടന്നപ്പോള് വന്ന ആള് തന്റെ സ്നേഹ മസൃണമായ പെരുമാറ്റം കൊണ്ട് എല്ലാവരെയും സന്തോഷിപ്പിച്ചു അംഗീകാരം നേടുകയും വീട്ടില് സ്ഥിര താമസം ആക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഞാന് ഈ സംഭവങ്ങള് വിവരിച്ചത് മാ.തോ.കുരിസിനെപ്പറ്റി പറയാന് ആണ്. ഈയിടെ മറ്റൊരു ബ്ലോഗ്ഗില് കണ്ട ഒരു വിവരണം ആണ് ഇതെഴുതാന് എന്നെ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചത്. ആ ബ്ലോഗ്ഗില് നിന്നും ചില ഭാഗങ്ങള് അതെ പടി ഞാന് പകര്ത്തുന്നു.

1931 ല് വഴിയരികില് മറഞ്ഞുകിടന്നിരുന്നതാണ് ഈ സ്ലീവ.

ഈ സ്ലീവ കടമറ്റത്തുള്ള പുരാതന പള്ളിയിലെ വലതുവശത്തെ ഭിത്തിയില് പതിച്ചുവച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
കോതനല്ലൂര് സ്ലീവ
ഈ സ്ലീവ കോതനല്ലൂരുള്ള കന്തീശങ്ങളുടെ പള്ളിയുടെ ഭിത്തിയില് കുമ്മായം കൊണ്ട് പൊതിഞ്ഞു മറക്കപ്പെട്ട രീതിയില് കാണപ്പെട്ടു. ഇപ്പോള് ഇത് പള്ളിക്ക് പുറത്തു സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

മാ. തോ. സ്ലീവാ യുടെ ചരിത്ര പരമായ പ്രാധാന്യത്തെ പറ്റി എനിക്ക് യാതൊരു സംശയവും ഇല്ല. സീറോ മലബാര് നസ്രാണികളുടെ വീടുകളിലും ജീവിതത്തിലും വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട വസ്തു ആയിരുന്നു എന്ന കാര്യവും ഞാന് സമ്മതിക്കുന്നു. പുരുഷന്മാര് കുടുമി ധരിച്ചിരുന്നെന്നും അവരുടെ കുടുമിയില് മാ.തോ. കുരിശു വെച്ചിരുന്നു എന്നതും സെരി തന്നെ. അതിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം കുറഞ്ഞത് പോര്ടുഗീസുകാര് ചെയ്ത ദ്രോഹങ്ങള് കൊണ്ടാണെന്നും ഞാന് സമ്മതിക്കുന്നു. അതൊന്നും ആ മാ. തോ. കുരിശു കുപ്പ തൊട്ടിയില് നിന്നും അള്ത്താരയില് കയറിയതിനെ ന്യായീകരിക്കാന് പറ്റുന്ന കാര്യമല്ല .
മാ. തോ. കുരിസിനെ വണങ്ങണം എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു ബഹു. പവ്വത്തില് തിരുമേനി ഇറക്കിയ ഇടയ ലേഖനം ആണ് പ്രശ്നങ്ങളുടെ തുടക്കം. എനിക്കറിയേണ്ടിയത് ഈ മാ. തോ. കുരിസിനു എന്തെങ്കിലും ദൈവിക സക്തി ഉണ്ടോ എന്നാണു. ആരെങ്കിലും ഒന്ന് കാര്യ കാരണം സഹിതം പറഞ്ഞു തരാമോ? theology or philosophy or ബൈബിള്. എന്തായാലും എനിക്ക് മനസിലാകും. അതായത് വിശുദ്ധ കുര്ബാനയെ ക്കാളും മഹത്തരമായി എന്തെങ്കിലും ഉണ്ടെങ്കില് ഞാനും ഈ കുരിശിന്റെ ഒരു ആരാധകന് ആകും. മറ്റുള്ളവരെ അതിനു പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും.
ഈ ചെറിയ കാര്യത്തെ കുറിച്ചു ഒരു പിതാവും ഇത്ര മാത്രം വാശി എടുക്കേണ്ടിയ കാര്യം ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. പരംപരാകതം ആയി നമ്മള് ചെയ്തു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒത്തിരി കാര്യങ്ങള് ഉണ്ട്. ഉദാ: നോവേനകള്, കൊന്ത ചൊല്ലല്, പല പ്രാര്ത്ഥനകള്. അങ്ങിനെ എന്തെല്ലാം. ചിലതൊക്കെ കെട്ടടങ്ങിയെങ്കിലും പലതും സജീവം ആയി നില നില്ക്കുന്നു. മാര്പാപ്പ grade കുറച്ച ഫിലോമിന, ഗീവര്ഗീസ് തുടങ്ങിയ പുണ്യാളന്മാര് പോലും ഇപ്പോഴും യാതൊരു കുഴപ്പവും ഇല്ലാതെ രൂപ കൂട്ടില് നിന്ന് ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇത്ര ആവേശം കാണിക്കാതിരുന്നെങ്കില് ഈ മാ. തോ. കുരിശും ഒരു പക്ഷെ ജനങ്ങളില് ഇടം നേടിയേനെ. സ്വല്പം സാവകാസത്തില് മതിയായിരുന്നു.
ഇപ്രകാരം ഒരു വിവാദം നില നില്ക്കുന്നത് സഭക്ക് യാതൊരു കാരണവശാലും ഭൂഷണം അല്ല. ആട് മോഷ്ടാക്കള് ഉള്ള കാലമാണ്. ഇത്ര നാളും വളര്ത്തി വലുത് ആക്കിയ മുട്ടന് ആടുകളെ കള്ളന് കൊണ്ട് പോകുകയും ചെയ്യും, കൊച്ചാപ്പി മാര് പെരുകുകയും ചെയ്യും. The same arguments he raises against mar Thoma Cross applies to the crucifix also.Crucifix is only a statue of Jesus on a plain Cross.
Who is there to certify the shape of the Cross on which Jesus was crucified ? Why God dislike a plain Cross ? Why the present Pope uses a plain Cross ?
How do we know what was the loikeness of Jesus to create a statue of Jesus ? It is all imaginations of artists.
Cross is an emblem. It is not a statue. Mar Thoma Cross is also an emblem which is inculturated in the Indian context.
Tom Varkey needs to learn to understand and accept others. This attitude is not christian.

Cross is an emblem. It is not a statue. Mar Thoma Cross is also an emblem which is inculturated in the Indian context.

What is More Important than The Holy Eucharist? – Tom Varkey
I do compliment Skylark for his arguments to convince the readers of this blog that the Mar Thoma Cross is not in any way greater than the Holy Eucharist. After reading his article which is commendable, I am sure in the minds of many readers, this question must have come up: “Is there anything more important than the Holy Eucharist and if there is, what?” Also, I saw the following question from one of the readers which I feel is a sincere one and therefore I thought I should address it. The question: “Pippiladan at least saw some trees. What about you? Did you see anything?” Therefore, the objective of this article is to answer these two questions.
First Question: Is there anything more important than the Holy Eucharist and if there is, what is it? In my humble opinion according to what the LORD has revealed to me, the answer is “Yes” and the answer to “what?” is: “You and Me”. Let me explain what I mean. In one sentence, the Holy Eucharist is our food which is given by Jesus to you and me to grow spiritually. I am sure you will agree with me that one who eats the food is definitely more important than the food itself. In Jn. 6:55-57 Jesus tells us: “My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.” Without any further explanation, I am sure it is very clear here that the Holy Eucharist is the food and drink that Jesus has given to us to grown in Him.
Now even though we are the ones to whom Jesus has given His flesh to eat and blood to drink, there is another dimension as to who we are to fully understand why we are more valuable than the Holy Eucharist. In Jn. 14:23 Jesus said: “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” From this verse it is clear that if we obey Jesus Christ, God the Father and Jesus will both come to live within us. In Acts 5:32 we read: “God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him.” Here it is clear that if we obey God (Jesus), the Holy Spirit also will come to live within us. Thus when we obey Jesus, all three persons of the Holy Trinity will come to live within us. Understanding this secret in a deep sense is what I call seeing the forest instead of only the trees that I talked about in my previous article.
Now I am sure it is easy to see why you and I are more important than the Holy Eucharist. But there is a very important condition for this to be true. We have to pledge total obedience to the Word of God and we have to constantly try to be filled with the Spirit. Only then we will fully become children of God in the true sense of the word. I am not saying we should be perfect. But at least we should be on the road to becoming perfect. Jesus said in Mt. 5:48: “Be ye perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Most of us think that it is impossible to do this and give up on this challenge given to us by Jesus right away dismissing it as impossible. But the reality is that it is possible if we are fully committed to this cause. We cannot be sinless because in Rom. 3:10 we read: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.”

But we can be blameless which is what God wants us from us. This is the purpose for which God has created us according to Eph. 1:4 where we read: “He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.” In 1 Jn. 1:7 we read: “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.” If we completely surrender to Jesus Christ to obey Him with all our heart and soul and strength, then whenever we fall short in our spiritual life due to our weaknesses, Jesus will purify us from the sin resulting from our weaknesses. Thus in the sight of God, we will always be blameless. This is what God wants us from us 24 hours/day 7 days/week. This is our secret to being perfect as our heavenly father is perfect which is perfectly possible. Put it in another way, spiritually speaking what happens to us when we live this way can be compared to a blood transfusion.
In a blood transfusion, the impurities in the blood of the patient is purified by passing the blood through a machine that absorbs all the impurities and then sent back into the body. After a couple of hours, the impure blood is purified to a point where the blood is almost pure. Thus the patient can live for another day or two with the purified blood. The blood of the patient does not become 100% pure. But it becomes almost pure, say 95%. In the case of the blood transfusion given by Christ described above in 1 Jn. 1:7, we become 100% pure as it says “purifies us from all sin”. Such a transfusion happens when we eat the flesh and drink the blood of Jesus Christ which has been given by Jesus Christ for feeding us spiritually. But certainly we are more important than the food and drink because we have God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit all living within us if we live a blameless life as described above.
Second Question: Pippiladan at least saw some trees. What about you? Did you see anything? The answer to this question from one of the readers is also “Yes.” Let me explain myself. As I referred to in my article, seeing trees and seeing the forest which is a total picture of all the trees combined are two different things. In Mk. 4:11 Jesus said: “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that “they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding.” There are two ways of understanding the Word of God: one in a superficial way which is sort of disconnected and in a way that does not give the one who reads the Word of God its deep meaning and its relevance to the total picture of salvation. The second way is described in 1 Ths. 1:5: “… the Gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction.” It is absolutely necessary for one to receive the Word of God with these three elements to see the relevance of each and every word in the Word of God to one’s salvation. The three elements are: the Power of God, the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. Without these three elements accompanying, the Word of God cannot take root in the heart and mind of the hearer. For this to happen Jesus has to reveal who the Father is as we read in Mt. 11:27: “No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.” In order for Jesus to reveal to a Christian with a deep understanding who the Father is, the pre-condition is that he must pledge total obedience to Jesus Christ in everything that the Word of God asks him to do. Unfortunately for someone who has pledged allegiance to the Mar Thoma Cross, this is impossible. Therefore he will never see the forest until he renounces the claver cross to totally surrender to Jesus Christ by obeying His command contained in Jn. 3:14.
