ഇന്ന് പ്രവാസികളുടെ ഇടയില്‍ യുദ്ധസമാനമായ ചേരതിരിവു സ്റ്ഷ്ടിക്കുന്നത്‌ മാര്‍തോമ കുരിശാണ്‌. അവരുടെ ഇടയില്‍ 'താമരകുരിശ്‌' അഥവാ 'ക്ളാവര്‍കുരിശ്‌ എന്നാണ്‌ ഇത്‌ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്‌. കുടുംബങ്ങളില്‍ പോലും ഇതിന്റെ പേരില്‍ വാക്കുതര്‍ക്കം നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്‌. ഈയടുത്തദിവസം നടന്ന സംഭവമാണ്‌ താഴെ വിവരിക്കുന്നത്‌. ചങ്ങനാശേരി സ്വദേശിനിയായ ഭാര്യ ആലുവാ സ്വദേശിയായ ഭര്‍ത്താവിനോട്‌ മെത്രാന്‍ പറയുന്ന താമര കുരിശ്ശിനെ സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നതാണ്‌ ശരിയെന്നു പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ " അതു ശരിയാണെങ്കില്‍ എന്തിനാണ്‌ എറണാകുളം-അങ്കമാലി അതിരൂപതയിലെ ചങ്കൂറ്റമുള്ള വൈദികര്‍ പൊതുനിരത്തില്‍ ഇറങ്ങി പ്രതിഷേധം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചത്‌ " എന്നായിരുന്നു ഭര്‍ത്താവിന്റെ മറുപടി. ഇതിന്റെ പേരില്‍ അമേരിക്കയില്‍ ചേരിതിരിഞ്ഞു നടക്കുന്ന കലഹങ്ങളില്‍ പോലീസു ഇടപ്പേടേണ്ട ഗതികേട്‌ പരിതാപകരമാണ്‌. തോമാസ്ളീഹാവാദത്തിനു മാറ്റുകൂട്ടുവാനും റോമിലെ പൌര്യസ്ത്യസംഘത്തെ വിശ്വസിപ്പിക്കുവാനും സഹായകരമായ ഒരുപാധിയായിരുന്നോ പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍ കുരിശ്‌? 1547-ല്‍ കണ്ടുകിട്ടിയ ഈ പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍ കുരിശ്ശിനു കൊടുത്ത പേരാണ് മാര്‍തോമാകുരിശ്‌. ഇന്ന് മാര്‍തോമാകുരിശിനെ ബഹുമാനിക്കുന്നവരുണ്ട്‌. ഇത്‌ മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെമേല്‍ അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിക്കുന്ന നയത്തോടു ഭൂരിപക്ഷം സഭാംഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും എതിര്‍പ്പുണ്ട്‌. കുരിശിനോടുള്ള എതിര്‍പ്പല്ലാ പിന്നയോ പലര്‍ക്കും ക്രൂശിതരുപത്തോടുള്ള വൈകാരിതക ഒന്നു വേറെയാണ്‌. 'മാര്‍തോമാകുരിശ്‌'എന്ന പദപ്രയോഗം തോമാശ്ലീഹ കൊണ്ടുവന്നിട്ടുള്ള കുരിശാണെന്നു ധാരണ സംജാതമാക്കുവാന്‍ ഉപകരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും യഥാര്‍തഥ്യം അതല്ലല്ലോ. പഴമക്കാരെ അടിച്ചേല്‍പ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന സംഗതികള്‍ പുതിയ തലമുറ എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവരല്ലല്ലോ. എങ്ങനെയാണ് പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍കുരിശു മാര്‍ തോമാ കുരിശായിമാറിയെന്നു ചരിത്രാന്വേക്ഷണത്തില്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്കു കിട്ടിയ വിവരങ്ങളാണ്‌ താഴെ ചേര്‍ക്കുന്നത്‌. 72 A.D - യിലാണ്‌ തോമാശ്ലീഹ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടത്‌. ആ സ്ഥലം ഇന്ന് മൌണ്ട്‌ തോമസ്‌ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ആറാംശതകത്തില്‍ അര്‍മേനിയര്‍ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികള്‍ അതിനടുത്തുള്ള തീരപ്രദേത്ത്‌ (മൈലാപൂര്) തോമാശ്ലീഹായുടെ കുഴിമാടം കണ്ടുകിട്ടിയതായി അവകാശപ്പെടുകയും അവിടെ ഒരു പള്ളിയും പണിതീര്‍ത്തു. അതിനുശേഷം ഉദ്ദേശം ആയിരം കൊല്ലങ്ങള്‍ക്കുശേഷം പോര്‍ത്തുഗ്ഗീസുകാര്‍ ആ തീരപ്രദേശത്ത്‌ കോളനി സ്ഥാപിക്കുവാന്‍വരുകയും ആറാംശതകത്തില്‍ പണിത പള്ളിയുടെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ പാളെവി (പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍) ലിഖിതങ്ങളോടുള്ള കുരിശു കണ്ടെടുത്തു. അന്നവര്‍ ആ കോളനിക്ക്‌ ഇട്ടപേര് SAM THOMAS എന്നാണ്‌. അതായത്‌ CITY OF THOMAS. 1547-ല്‍ അവിടെ എത്തിയ പോര്‍ത്തുഗ്ഗീസ്സു മിഷ മിഷ്യനറിമാരില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ Antonio De Gouvea അന്നു കണ്ടുകിട്ടിയ ആ കുരിശ്ശിനു നല്‍കിയ പേരാണ് CROSS OF SAM THOME. അതിന്റെ്‌ അര്‍ത്ഥം CROSS OF THOMAS CITY എന്നായിരുന്നു. അന്നത്തെ ഭാവനസമ്പന്നരായ സഭാനേത്റ്ത്വത്തിലെ ചിലഅധികാരികള്‍ CROSS OF SAM THOME എന്ന പേര് CROSS OF SAINT THOMAS എന്നാക്കി മാറ്റി. ഇവിടെ കൂട്ടിച്ചേര്‍ത്തത്‌ സിറ്റി എന്ന അര്‍ത്ഥംവരുന്ന SAM എന്ന പദത്തിലെ M നു പകരം I,N,T എന്നു മൂന്നു അക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെ തിരിമറി നടത്തി. അന്നുമുതല്‍ അവിടെ കണ്ടുകിട്ടിയ പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍ കുരിശ്‌ CROSS OF SAINT THOMAS എന്നപേരില്‍ അറിയപെടുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ഈ സംഭവം നടക്കുന്നത്‌ 16-ആം ശതകത്തിലാണ്. അത് മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക്‌ തര്‍ജിമ ചെയ്തപ്പോള്‍ മാര്‍ തോമാ കുരിശായി. അങ്ങനെയാണ്‌ പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍ കുരിശു മാര്‍ തോമാ കുരിശായി മാറിയത്.
അര്‍മേനിയന്‍ ക്രിസ്തിയ സംസ്കാരം കേരളസഭയെ വളരെയധികം സ്വാധീനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. ഇതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ്‌ ഈ കുരിശ്ശിന്റെ പകര്‍പ്പുകള്‍ കോട്ടയം, ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരി, മുട്ടുചിറ, കോതനല്ലൂര്, ആലങ്ങാട്‌, കടമറ്റം എന്നീ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലെ പള്ളികളില്‍ കാണുവാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നത്‌. 52 A.D. യിലാണ്‌ തോമാശ്ലീഹ മലബാര്‍ തീരത്തെതിയതെന്ന്‌ ചരിത്രകാരന്മാര്‍ പറയുന്നു. അക്കാലത്തു കുരിശ്‌ പരിഹാസചിഹ്നവും ക്രിമിനലുകളെ വധിക്കുന്നതിനുമുള്ള ഉപകരണവുമായിരുന്നു. നാലാം ശതകത്തിലാണ് വി. ഹെലേന ക്രിസ്തുവനെ തറച്ച കുരിശു കണ്ടെടുക്കുന്നത്‌. ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ മരണശേഷം എത്രയോ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷമാണ്‌ കുരിശ്‌ ദൈവചിഹ്നമായി ആദരിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്‌. പേര്‍ഷ്യന്‍ കുരിശ്‌ തോമാശ്ലീഹ കൊണ്ടുവന്നതാണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം സ്ഥാപിച്ച പള്ളികളില്‍ അവ കുഴിച്ചിട്ടതാണെന്നുള്ള വാദഗതി ചരിത്രവുമായി പൊരുത്തപ്പെടുന്നില്ല. ഈ കുരിശശ്‌ കഥ അസത്യമാണ്‌.
സത്യത്തെ തിരസ്കരിക്കുകയും അസത്യത്തെ വണങ്ങുകയും ചെയുമ്പോള്‍ വരും തലമുറയ്ക്ക് പാര്യമ്പര്യം പകര്‍ന്നു കൊടുക്കാന്‍ ഉത്തരവാദിത്വമുള്ള നമ്മള്‍ വലിയൊരു അപരാധമാണ്‌ ചെയ്യുന്നത്‌. അതുവഴി സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗരാജ്യത്തിലേക്കുള്ള പുതുതലമുര്രയുടെ വഴികളും നമ്മള്‍ തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
"നിങ്ങള്‍ സത്യം അറിയുകയും സത്യം നിങ്ങളെ സ്വതന്ത്രരാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും"( John 8 : 32).

I hope our spiritual fathers and the parish vicars one day will repent for their misbehaviors and recognize the truth. Antonio Gouvea named it as Cross of Sam Thomae means Cross of the City of Saint Thomas.
That means, the city was named after Saint Thomas. This cross was found in the place of martydom of Saint Thomas. So, people might have called it as Cross of saint Thomas.
This happened in AD 1547. Kattikkaren accuses that the authorities cleverly corrupted that term into Saint Thomas Cross.
Who were the authorities ? The Roman Catholic Misionaries and the Roman Catholic Bishops- none from the Thomas Christians. Therefore, there is no point in accusing that this was a corruption by the traditionalists in the Syro Malabar Church.
There is no such a propaganda by anyone that this Cross was brought by Saint Thomas himself. This is a wrong accusation by the opponents of the Saint Thomas cross to win their argument.

Tell us honestly, why the Roman Catholic Church decided that Dec 18 as the feast of miraculous cross of Mailappore ? What is the miraculous cross of mailappore ? Is it the crucifix in the church of Mailappore or the Pahlavi inscribed Saint Thomas Cross of Mailappore ?
Therefore, the Roman catholic Church has accepted this model of cross. Then why you are opposing it as non Christian or non catholic ? Now, who is telling false informations ? Those who oppose this cross are opposing the Roman Catholic Church. They are trying to cause division in the Catholic Church. They are anti Catholics.
Saint Thomas Cross is called so because, it was the only cross venerated by Saint Thomas Christians. Gouvea has clearly documented that all of their churches has crosses similar to that of Mailappore and nothing else.

എന്നാല്‍, എറണാകുളത്തെ വൈദീകരുടെ ശ്രമമായി, അവിടെ വിശ്വാസികള്‍ ആര്‍ക്കും ഇതിന്റെ രാഷ്ട്രീയം അറിയില്ല. ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരിയില്‍ നടപ്പിലായത് എറണാകുളത് നടക്കാതെയിരിക്കാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു കൊണ്ട്, ഒരു ചങ്ങനാശ്ശേരിക്കാരന്‍............

Dear misguided brother, the ultimate question is not what I said or what you said. It is always, “What does God say?” What God says is the only truth and if anyone contradicts what God says, it is a big lie and heretical. In Jn. 8:31-32 we read: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” So if you want to be free from all these arguments and counter-arguments, just listen to what God says regarding the Crucifix which is the Cross of Christ. Don’t listen to what others say about the cross of Sam Thome. If we listen to what people say about the Cross of Sam Thome, it is wrong for 2 reasons: 1) We will not be holding on to Jesus’ teaching as we are commanded to do in Jn.8:32 quoted above; 2) We will be violating what one of the Apostles of Jesus. Apostle Paul in Titus 3:9 says: “Avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.” Only truth can set us free and the truth is the Word of God as we read in Jn. 17:17 from Jesus’ prayer: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”

There are also other extremely important teachings on the Crucifix in the Word of God such as Col. 2:8 where we read: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”
Phil. 3:18-19: “As I have often told you before and now say again, even with tears, many live as enemies of the Cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, their glory is in their shame.”
Gal. 6:14: “May I never boast except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, …” The cross of Jesus Christ is not the Cross of Sam Thome. It is the Cross of Calvary on which Christ hung to pay the penalty for your sins and mine and those of the whole of humanity. There are other verses also, but I hope that these are convincing enough.
As an additional point of argument: Brother, you point out in your comment:

You sanctimoniously pretend that the blame is to be placed on the Roman Catholic Missionaries and Roman Catholic Bishops and not on the Thomas Cristians. If you are sincere, why don’t you do what they do instead of playing the blaming game. I am sure you will agree with me when I say “actions speak louder than words”. Walk into any Catholic Church in the U.S. or in any other country in the world. Chances are extremely high that you will see the Crucifix in the center of the sanctuary and not the Cross of Sam Thome which according to the article of Bro. Kattikkaren means the ‘Cross of the City of Thomas’ which fanatical people like you have changed into ‘Cross of Saint Thomas’ and are trying to impose on unwilling parishioners like those in Garland, Texas. They have done this apparently because they did not like holding on to the teachings of Christ as Jesus is asking us to do in Jn. 8:32 to qualify as “His real disciples”. What Jesus says about people like you is so true when Jesus said in Jn. 3:19-20: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.” Brother Anonymous, wake up. This is the verdict that will one day be declared by Jesus Christ if you don’t listen up and act now. As we read in 2 Cor. 6:2: “Now is the day of salvation.” Be saved by listening to truth which is contained in the Word of God and not in the mal-propaganda of the Chaldean sect of the Syro-Malabar Church which is totally misguided because they are based on “foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law” which is against the Word of God according to Titus 3:9.cited above.

Saint Thomas Cross is called so because, it was the only cross venerated by Saint Thomas Christians. Gouvea has clearly documented that all of their churches has crosses similar to that of Mailappore and nothing else.

To date we have no historical evidence that Apstole Thomas came to India. But we remain in our traditional belief.
In September 2006, Pope Benedict XVI made a speech in which he stated that Saint Thomas evangelized Syria and Persia and went to Western India. Christianity according to him then reached South India. Do you now say that Pope is now non catholic and non Christian? Is He dividing the Church ?
The whole trouble is our Bishops have spread many myths without concrete historical evidences. Now instead of accepting their foolishness they are trying to make not only their own people fools but the whole world. No surprise, they found that Mar Thoma Cross is an ideal instrument for that purpose.
If you want to live as a true Christian follow Jesus and worship the cross on which he had suffered for the sake of whole of humanity. Jesus taught us a prayer also
“ Our Father…..
………….. And lead us not into temptation,but deliver us from evil."( Here the evil is Mar Thoma cross because it disturbs peace in our families, society and faith )
