Joe, a farmer from the countryside one day visited his cousin Mike, a businessman in New York City. He was taken aback by the breath-taking scenes of the magnificent skyscrapers in the City as they went for an evening walk that evening. Mike was bragging about the City and how wonderful his job as a broker was and how much money he was making.
Suddenly Joe stopped and said in great excitement: “I heard it; I sure did!” Mike thought Joe was acting so weird and asked what he was talking about. Joe said there was a beetle somewhere nearby because he heard it. A couple of minutes went by. Suddenly Joe said again: “It’s here; I know where it is.” Then he walked over to the side of the road where there was a coconut-sized stone which he lifted up in utter excitement. There it was – the beetle that was chirping. Mike couldn’t care less although Joe’s excitement could hardly be contained .
We have an application of this story to what is going on in our Syro-Malabar Church today. Mike in the above story could not hear the beetle because he was not interested in such stuff. But hailing from the countryside, even in the middle of the hustle and bustle of New York City, Joe was thrilled to hear the chirp of the beetle. In Garland, battle lines are already drawn for a mighty battle between a God-given truth and a man-created lie on December 17. But most of the folks will miss it. Because their minds are preoccupied with worldly distractions just as the mind of Mike was in our story. Even as the consecration of the newly built church will be going on within the well-decorated church, a feeble voice will be heard from the Savior hanging on the Crucifix in the nearby Parish Hall. The message of the dying Savior will be: “Will you be a witness to My Gospel and My Cross?” Only those who are tuned to the voice of the Holy Spirit will hear it. Unfortunately in the case of many of them, their hearts and minds will be filled with thoughts surrounding the idolatrous ‘Mar Thoma Cross and thus tuned to the spirit of Satan instead. However, most of the hearts and minds of those who will be attending the consecration service will be bleeding with sorrow to see the Cross of their Savior being trampled by the claver fanatics in the new church by not giving it the importance it deserves.
Well how important is the Crucifix? In 1 Cor. 2:2 Paul says: “When I was with you, I resolved to know nothing except Him and Him crucified.” In Gal. 6:14 again he says: “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Again in Phil. 3:10 Paul says: “I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.” In Rom. 6:8 again Paul says: “If we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.” The only way we can live with Jesus in heaven is to be identified with Him in His death by knowing Him in His death by focusing on Jesus Christ on the Crucifix. That is why he further emphasizes this point in 1 Cor. 4:16 by saying: “I urge you to imitate me.” In other words, according to Paul, this is an urgent matter that can never be over-emphasized.
Peter endorses all what Paul says in the above verses about the Crucifix when he says in 2 Pet 3:16: “His [Paul’s] letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.” This is not only an endorsement of Peter’s endorsement of Paul’s position on the Crucifix but also a stern warning to those who do not give the importance that it deserves.
Paul also gives some strong warnings to those who go after the Mar Thoma Cross as in Col. 2:8: “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.” From these warnings, it is amply clear that the Crucifix is absolutely essential for our salvation which is the very reason why Jesus told us in Jn. 3:14 that we should raise the Son of Man “just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert.” The reason why we should do it is given in Jn. 3:15: “so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.” In spite of all these, Bishop Powathil, Bishop Angadiath, Bishop Alencherry and their followers are systematically getting rid of the Crucifixes from our churches including this Syro-Malabar church in Garland. We must warn these “ignorant and unstable men” (2 Pet. 3:16) of the seriousness of the huge mistake they are making.
In Rev. 2:26 Jesus says: “To the one who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations. He will rule them with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery – just as I have received authority from my Father.” So in Garland, the battle for the Crucifix is not a matter of just another cross. Being on the right side of this battle will mean the difference between reigning with Christ in His kingdom (Rev. 2:26) and meeting eternal destruction (Phil. 3:19). In 1 Cor. 2:9-10 we read: “The eye has not seen, the ear has not heard and no mind has comprehended what God has prepared for those who love Him [and His Crucifix] but God has revealed it to us by His Spirit.” Just as Joe was attuned to the sounds of beetles even in the hustle and bustle of the City, those whose hearts and minds are truly in tune with the promptings of the Spirit can certainly hear the beckoning voice of the Savior from the nearby Parish Hall inviting them to bear witness to His Cross, the Crucifix. They will also hear the stern warnings from the pages of the Bible where Paul gives us some serious warnings through Col. 2:8 and Phil. 3:18-19. In Phil. 3:18-19 he warns us: “As I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame.”

So the ultimate question is: Would you rather be a king ruling the heavenly kingdom with King Jesus along with Paul and Peter and all your favorite saints in heaven for all eternity or would you like to lose all that glory and be destroyed as we read above. No way can the worthless favors which Bishop Powathil and Bishop Angadiath and Bishop Alencherry promise to those who support them in marketing their idolatrous ‘Mar Thoma Cross’ which is nothing but chicken feed add up to the glory of reigning with King Jesus in His Kingdom. But there is a price to be paid for such an awesome glory which the “eye has not seen, the ear not heard and the human heart not comprehended.” We have to be witnesses to Him and His cross, the Crucifix in Garland, Coppell, Chicago even to the ends of the earth wherever the claver maniacs are trying to trash the Crucifix and consequently our faith. Such witnessing is not easy. It takes courage and a lot of faith. As we read in 1 Cor. 3:18, it means being willing to become a fool in the eyes of the world so that we can be wise in the eyes of God. It is like asking Mike to become another Joe and love the chirping beetles even in the middle of New York City. It is absolute foolishness for the claver fanatics to comprehend the value of the Crucifix, because as we read in 1 Cor. 2:10 it has to be revealed to them by the Spirit of God. And this is impossible for them since they cannot receive the Holy Spirit whom God gives ONLY to those who obey Jesus Christ (Acts 5:32 and 1 Pet. 1:2). To receive the Holy Spirit they must embrace the Crucifix in total obedience to Jesus Christ who asks us in Jn. 3:14 to lift Him up as an external symbol of our inner faith in Him “to have eternal life” following the examples and warnings of Paul and Peter, our first Pope which they stubbornly refuse to obey.

I don’t care how you get here, by flight, car, limo, Santa’s sleigh, whatever. But be in line at 9:00 AM sharp. See ya’ll in front of the church on Saturday, December 17, 2011. Our Agenda: Occupy SMCC and take it back for King Jesus by putting on a spectacular show in Garland – Tom Varkey, Your fellow soldier in the battle for the Crucifix, our glorious trophy for all eternity."

ഇത് കൊച്ചാപ്പിചിന്തകള്ആയി മാത്രം അല്ല ഞാന് കാണുന്നത് , ഒരു വിഭാഗം സാധുക്കളായ കത്തോലിക്കരുടെ ആശങ്കകളും ഉല്ഘണ്ടകളുമാണ്. (പക്ഷെ കൊച്ചാപ്പി അത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അഭിപ്രായമാക്കി സ്വയം ഉത്തരവാദിത്ത്വം ഏറ്റെടുക്കുകയാണ് . അതൊരു നല്ല ഗുണമായെ ഞാന് കാണുന്നോള്ളൂ . ഒന്നുമല്ലേലും വിപരീത അഭിപ്രായമാണെങ്കിലും നമ്മള് പാലാക്കാരല്ലേ ? കൊച്ചാപ്പി ഒരുവാഴപ്പിണ്ടി എടുത്തു മീനച്ചിലാറ്റിലിട്ടു അതില് കയറിയിരുന്നാല് വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കസമയത്തണെങ്കില് ഒരു നാഴികക്കുള്ളില് ഞങ്ങളുടെ കടവിലെത്താം ) അതിനവരെ ഞാന് കുറ്റപ്പെടുത്തില്ല. അവരെ ബോധാവല്ക്കരിക്കയാണ് വേണ്ടത്. താങ്കള് പറഞ്ഞ തരത്തിലുള്ള വളരെ ന്യൂനപക്ഷമായ "തരികടകള്" കാരണം ബഹുഭൂരിപക്ഷം വരുന്ന സമര്പ്പിതരായ നല്ലയച്ചന്മാര്ക്കുകൂടി സമൂഹത്തില് ബഹുമാനം കുറഞ്ഞു. അതില് പാര്ട്ടികളിലും കുടുബങ്ങളിലും ഇവര്ക്കെതിരെ അപവാദം പറഞ്ഞു ഇവരെ മോശക്കരാക്കുന്നതില് കൊച്ചപ്പിമാര്ക്കും പിപ്പിലാഥാന്മാര്ക്കും ഉല്ലാ പങ്കു മറച്ചുപിടിക്കാന് പറ്റില്ല . എന്നാല് പിന്നെ ളോഹയെ മറ്റുള്ളവര് അവഹെളിക്കെണ്ടയെന്നു കരുതി പൊതുസ്ഥലത്ത് ഉപയോഗം നിര്ത്തിയതാകാനും മതി.

പിന്നെ നമ്മുടെയൊക്കെ വസ്ത്ര ധാരണ രീതി ഇക്കാലയളവില് മാറിയില്ലേ 30 വര്ഷം മുന്പുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഊഷ്മാവാണോ ഇപ്പോഴുള്ളത്?. ഇനി ഒരു പട്ടക്കാരന്റെ സ്ഥാനത്തു നിന്ന് ചിന്തിക്കാന് ശ്രമിക്കാം. ഈ ളോഹ ഒന്ന് കഴുകി ഉണക്കി ഇസതിരിയിടുവാന് അത്രയെളുപ്പമോന്നുമാണെന്നു ഞാന്കരുതുന്നില്ല. തിരക്കുപിടിച്ചിന്നത്തെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ സഞ്ചാര സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം പോലും ഒരു ഘടകമായിരിക്കാം. പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് അമേരിക്ക പോലുള്ള സ്ഥലങ്ങളില് , ഓരോ വസ്ത്ര ധാരണ രീതിയുട് . മലയാളം പള്ളി കളെക്കാള് സ്രെഷ്ട്ടമാണ് അമേരിക്കന് പള്ളികളെന്നുപറയുന്നവരും അവരുടെ അച്ചന്മാരെ പള്ളിക്ക് പുറത്തു പോകുമ്പോള് ളോഹ ധരിക്കാറുണ്ടോ? കെട്ടിട നിര്മാണ സ്ഥലങ്ങളില് ,ഈ വേഷത്തോടുകൂടി പോകുക ദുഷ്ക്കരവുമാണ് . എന്റെ രണ്ടു പെങ്ങന്മാര് കന്യാസ്ത്രീകളാണ് , യാത്രവേലയിലെ അവരുടെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ട് ഞാന് നേരിട്ട് കണ്ടിട്ടുള്ളവാണാണ് . യാത്രക്ക് കൃത്യം വണ്ടിക്കൂലി മാത്രം കൊടുക്കുന്ന മദര്. ബസ്സില് വച്ച് ഒരു ധര്മ്മക്കാരന് വന്നു ചോദിക്കുമ്പോള് എന്തുചെയ്യും? നീട്ടിപ്പിടിച്ച പാത്രം പിന്വലിക്കാനുള്ള കരുണ അവര് കാണിക്കാറില്ല. കുറച്ചുകഴിയുമ്പോള് യാത്രക്കാരുടെ ശ്രദ്ധ മുഴുവന് കന്യാസ്ത്രീയിലും, ഒരുത്തന് പോയാല് വാല് വാലേ വന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കും. ഈ വിഷമസന്ധിയെ എങ്ങനെ തരണം ചെയ്യും?, കൊടുത്താല് മദര് ശകാരിക്കും , കൊടുത്തില്ലെങ്കില് ചില ധര്മ്മക്കാര് വല്ലതും പറഞ്ഞെന്നുമിരിക്കും. സഹായം ചോദിക്കുന്നവര് ധാരാളം കാണും. ചുറ്റിലും, ബസിലുമുള്ള കള്ളു കുടിയന്മാരും മറ്റും പറയുന്ന അസഭ്യങ്ങള് (അച്ചന്മാരോടല്ല) യാതൊരു നിവൃത്തിയുമില്ലാതെ കേള്ക്കേണ്ടിവരുമ്പോള് കുപ്പായത്തോടെയിരിക്കുന്നതിനേക്കാള് ഉചിതം കുപ്പായം ഇല്ലാതെയിരിക്കുന്നതല്ലേ? കുപ്പായവസ്ത്രത്തെ വെറുപ്പോടെ കാണുന്ന ബാപ്ടിസ്ട്ടു കളുടെയും പ്രോട്ടസ്ട്ടന്റെ കാരുടെയുംഇടയില് യാഹൂദറബ്ബിമാര്പോലും ക്പായം മാറ്റി Three piece suite ആക്കി . ഇതിനെയൊക്കെ മറികടക്കാന് വായനക്കാര്ക്ക് തോന്നുന്ന ഉപായം പറയുക . നാട്ടില് വേനല്ക്കാലത്ത് പഞ്ഞിത്തുണി കൊണ്ടുണ്ടാക്കിയ അരക്കയ്യന് ഉടുപ്പുമിട്ട് കുര്ബ്ബാനക്ക് പോകുന്നവര് ,ചൂടത്തു വിയര്ത്തു ഹോ എന്തൊരു ചൂടെന്നു പരാതി പറയുന്നൂ. പട്ടും കൃതൃമ നാരുകളും കൊണ്ടുണ്ടാക്കിയ പലനിര വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്ക്കുള്ളില് നില്ക്കുന്ന പട്ടക്കാരനെക്കുറിച്ചോരിക്കലെങ്കിലും ഓര്ത്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ?( നല്ല തണുപ്പത്ത് സൌകര്യമാണെന്ന കാര്യം മറക്കുന്നില്ല). നാല്പതു കഴിഞ്ഞാല് പലകാരണത്താല് തെരുതെരെ മൂത്രവിസര്ജനം നടത്തെണ്ടാവരാണ് നമ്മാള് ആണുങ്ങള് ,ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു ശങ്ക കുര്ബ്ബനക്കിടയില് തോന്നിയാല് ,എന്ന് ഞാന് ഓര്ത്തിട്ടുണ്ട് , എതെല്ലാം കാരണത്താല് നാം കുര്ബ്ബാനക്കിടക്ക് പുറത്തുപോകും , ഇവര്ക്കിതുവള്ളതും സാധിക്കുമോ? ഒന്ന് ചോറിയാനെങ്കിലും സാധിക്കുമോ , ളോഹക്കുല്ലിലൊരു ഉറുമ്പിരുന്നു കടിച്ചാലോ/ സഹിക്കുക തന്നെ. ളോഹയിട്ട് യാത്രചെയ്യുന്ന അച്ചന്മാരും ഇതേ പ്രതിസന്ധികളെ തരണം ചെയ്യേണ്ടാവരാണ്.ഇത് ഞാന് കണ്ട് മനസിലാക്കിയതാണ് , ഒരുപക്ഷെ ലോഹയുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന വിഷമങ്ങള് ഇനിയും കാണും അതച്ചന്മാര്ക്കെ അറിയൂ . ഇങ്ങനെയുള്ള പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെ വിശ്വാസികളെ പറഞ്ഞു മനസിലാക്കണമെന്നാണ് എന്റെ അഭിപ്രായം . എങ്കിലും ഇങ്ങനെയുള്ള വിഷമങ്ങളിലും ആരെങ്കിലും ളോഹ ഇട്ടു നടക്കുന്നുവെങ്കില് അവര് കൂടുതല് അഭിനന്ദനം അര്ഹിക്കുന്നൂ.
