ചിക്കാഗോ ആസ്ഥാനമാക്കി സീറോ മലബാര്‍ കാത്തലിക് ലെയ്റ്റി ഓര്‍ഗനൈസേഷന്‍ (ഓഫ് നോര്‍ത്ത് അമേരിക്ക) ( SMCLO) എന്ന പേരില്‍ അല്മായരുടെതായ പുതിയ ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്ര സംഘടന രൂപം കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ചിക്കാഗോ സീറോ മലബാര്‍ ഇടവകയിലെ ചില പ്രമുഖ അംഗങ്ങളുടെ മനസ്സില്‍ രൂപം കൊണ്ട പ്രസ്തുത സംഘടിത പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്‍റെ ഔദ്യോകിക ഉല്‍ഘാടനം ജാനുവരി 15 വൈകുന്നേരം 6 മണിക്ക് Des Plaines ല്‍ ഗോള്‍ഫ് റോഡും മില്‍വാക്കിയും കൂടുന്നിടത്ത്‌ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ന്യൂ ചൈന ബഫെ എന്ന banquet ഹാളില്‍ വച്ച് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നതാണ്.

Our parish priest is a very learned man. He knows everything. He tells us what to do and we just follow him, said an elderly lady.
Our parish priest is an autocrat. He doesn't want our opinions. He won't allow others to do anything, he fears others can mess up everything.
In our parish, when we come up with a suggestion, or an opinion, the priest is keen to find out who said that. Unless he knows who said it, he would not like to proceed. In our parish the parish priest takes all the decisions. He has a few favorites who execute all his decisions, an young lady quipped in. And that indeed is partiality!
The above are comments I collected in one of my pastoral communication classes,in a North Indian parish, while talking on the importance of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) in a parish, the most important unit that helps create community participation and a sense of belongingness in the parish is the PPC. And good communication is the
basis of building an effective PPC. Participation of the members of the parish in the decision making and execution of all the activities of the parish is the central focus of the PPC. Canon law numbers 228, 536
and 537 speak highly of the necessity for PPC in every parish. Earlier, since I already established in this column that the purpose of communication is to enable participation and empowerment of the people and thus
build strongly united community,let me look at the formation of PPC from a communication perspective.

Theological foundation:
Like in the apostolic times, people can still come together to share their everything, all their resources
to build a community of love effectively (Acts 3\12).PPCs emphasize the concept, that it is the people's parish, not of the
priests. The priest cannot and must not run things his way, he is here for a short time,like a bird of passage,it must be the people who are responsible for running the parish and its various activities.
PPCs can help the resources of the people to be made available to the parish community and the less privileged members cared for more, if an open and friendly atmosphere
is built up in the parish.
Membership: The PPC is constituted of roughly 15- 25 people depending on the size of the parish. PPC consists of representatives of the parish: from various wards \ sectors, pious associations, religious, important institutions and of course, the parish priest,
the non-voting assistant parish priests, etc.
Gender equality may be maintained as much as possible. The members are normally elected for 3 years, every year one third being changed. A substitute for each member may
also always be elected, who must come in case of the absence of the elected member.
Modus operandi: Anyone of these members may be elected president, not necessarily the parish priest. In these PPC meets, which is called every fortnight, every activity of the parish may be discussed.The agenda may be prepared in advance. Points may be
supplied to the agenda by anyone of the members collected from those whom they represent.
Documenting the resources of the parish: Resources include money, personnel,labour, special talents etc.The first priority of the PPC is to find the resources of the
parish, document and update these periodically. These have to be made available for reference to the parishioners, through parish website or other ways.
Executive committee:
The PPC needs to have an executive committee of at least 4 people excluding the parish priest, and in emergency these may be given the power to change decisions in consultation with the parish riest.
The Secretary must be an elected person, the assistants parish priest(s)if any, could be well utilized in this post.

Democratic decision making:
Never leave the final word to the parish priest as is often done.It is the duty of the members to be well informed of all the issues discussed. A 2\3 majority or at least a simple majority (50%
plus one) may be considered the decision point.
Duration of meetings: The more the meetings, the more the participation. However, too many meetings may not possible.At least a meeting a month is a must.
Creating a community:
PPCs are attempts at getting the participation of the whole people in running the parish. Wide range of opinions collected from the parishioners help decisions to favour the faith needs of the people. For this reason, the parish priest may not be the chairman of the PPC and also not part of the executive committee, too. If in many parts of the world Catholics
are leaving the church,it is mainly because they feel isolated from the activities of the parish. PPC can be an efficient means to re-evangelize them. "Pastoral councils often fail to function in an effective manner because parish priests are afraid that they won't be able to run the parish their own way. I often wonder why they want to take over our parish and run their way" commented an elderly parishioner who was a PPC member for six years, with two terms.
For all those priests who have been speaking endlessly in national and regional seminars on the importance of empowering the laity, setting up a PPC in the manner suggested
above can be a bitter pill to swallow. They may suggest that it will destroy the church, but try doing it and they will see that the
laity can be very responsible

I was fortunate enough to attend the very first SMCLO kickoff meeting in Chicago. I was very imopressed with the initiative, dedication, determination and faith of those who attended and especially the leaders. I am confident that this organization coupled with the ongoing work of the St. Alphonsa Foundation in Coppell can go a long way in achieving many landmark achievements. I see every potential for it on the horizon. Of course, our greatest strength is our Savior Himself whose Cross we venerate and are trying to hold on to at any cost which is one of the objectives of the SMCLO also just as the St. Alphonsa Foundation even though their main functional arena is charitable work and other related functions. I will cherish the memories of meeting some of the Syro-Malabar Catholics with great faith and look forward to working with them in the near future. I hope the members of this organization would be much more forthcoming in joining me for the next Occupy SMCC rally held to be in Chicago within the next month (Date to be finalized soon).

അടുത്ത മാസം ധ്യാന ഗുരു ഫ സേവിയെര്‍ ഖാന്‍ വട്ടായിലും ടീമും UK യില്‍ പര്യടനം നടത്തുന്നു. അല്മീയത വില്പന തന്നെ ലക്‌ഷ്യം. ഇപ്പോള്‍ ധ്യാനം എന്ന വാക്ക് തന്നെ ആരും മിണ്ടാറില്ല. സ്വര്‍ഗീയ വിരുന്നു, ബൈബിള്‍ കണ്‍വെന്ഷന്‍ എന്നൊക്കെ ആണ് പറയാറ്. ധ്യാന ഗുരുക്കന്മാരുടെ പരിപാടി വായിച്ചാല്‍ സിനിമ താരങ്ങളുടെ ട്രുപ്പും മുതുകാടും മറ്റും ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ വിദേശത്ത് കറങ്ങുന്നത് പോലെ തന്നെ ആണ്. രണ്ടു മൂന്നു മാസം പോയി കറങ്ങുക. ഡോളര്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കി തിരികെ വരിക. വീണ്ടും പോകുക. അത് തന്നെ ജോലി. വിദേശ കറന്‍സി ആയതിനാല്‍ വിദേശത്തും ഇന്ത്യയിലും നികുതി ഒന്നും കൊടുക്കേണ്ടതില്ല താനും. സ്വല്പം വാക് ചാതുര്യം ഉണ്ടായാല്‍ മാത്രം മതി.
ഇപ്പോള്‍ കേരളത്തില്‍ എഴുത്തും വായനയും പഠിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള എല്ലാ മലയാളി വൈദികരും ധ്യാന പ്രസംഗത്തില്‍ specialise ചെയ്തു വിദേശ രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ ചുറ്റി നടന്നു മലയാളീ കുഞ്ഞാടുകളെ അല്മീയതയിലേക്ക് തിരികെ കൊണ്ട് വന്നു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ഓരോരുത്തരും അഞ്ചും ആറും പ്രാവശ്യം പോകുന്നുണ്ട്. (മാതാ അമൃതാനന്ദമയി ആണെങ്കില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയില്‍ ഉള്ളതിനേക്കാള്‍ ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ വിദേശത്ത് ആണ് കഴിയുന്നത്‌.അതിനെപ്പറ്റി പിന്നീടു പറയാം). കേരളത്തിലെ എല്ലാ അച്ചന്മാരും ധ്യാന പ്രസംഗത്തിനായിട്ടു എന്താ വിദേശത്തുള്ള സമ്പന്ന രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് മാത്രം പോകുന്നത്. വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യ , ആഫ്രിക്ക എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലോന്നും ആരും പോകുന്നതായി കേള്‍ക്കുന്നില്ല. അവിടത്തെ ആള്‍ക്കാരെ ധ്യാനം നടത്തി നല്ലവര്‍ ആക്കെണ്ടേ? അതോ അമേരിക, UK പോലത്തെ സമ്പന്ന രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ മലയാളികള്‍ മാത്രം തീര്‍ത്തും പാപികളായി ജീവിക്കുന്നവരായിട്ടുള്ളോ? ഇത്ര ഒക്കെ പയറ്റിയിട്ടും ഈ പറഞ്ഞ സമ്പന്ന രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ മലയാളികളുടെ ഇടയില്‍ കലഹം, വിവാഹ മോചനം തുടങ്ങിയ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ കൂടുന്നതല്ലാതെ കുറയുന്നതായി കാണുന്നില്ലല്ലോ? കൌമാര പ്രായക്കാരായ കുട്ടികള്‍ പോലും dating ഉം മറ്റുമായി കറങ്ങുന്നു. കുട്ടികളോ പ്രായമായവരോ അല്ല ഇവരുടെ ലക്‌ഷ്യം എന്ന് വ്യക്തം. എത്ര മാത്രം charge ചെയ്താലും charge ആകാത്ത പഴയ battery യുടെ സ്ഥിതിയില്‍ scrap ആയവര്‍ ആണെങ്കില്‍ അവരുടെ ഇടയില്‍ ഇനിയും ധ്യാന പ്രസംഗം നടത്തി സമയം കളയെണ്ടിയ കാര്യം ഉണ്ടോ? അതോ കലഹ പ്രിയരായ ദമ്പതികളെ യോജിപ്പിക്കാതെ വിദ്വേഷത്തില്‍ നില നിറുത്തുന്നത് VKN ഇന്റെ പയ്യന്‍ കഥകളിലെ society lady സ്വന്തമായി ചേരി പ്രദേശം നിലനിര്‍ത്തുന്നത് പോലത്തെ ഒരു adjustment ആണോ? പാട്ടും കൊട്ടും ഒക്കെ ഉള്ളതിനാല്‍ സ്വല്പം entertainment നടക്കുന്നു എന്നത് സത്യം.മലയാളി കുടുംബങ്ങളെ നേര്‍വഴിക്കു നടത്തുക എന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ Benjamin Franklin ഇന്റെ പടമുള്ള പച്ച നോട്ടുകളാണ് ലക്‌ഷ്യം എന്ന് സംശയിച്ചു പോകുന്നു. ധ്യാന പ്രസംഗകര്‍ യാതൊരു വിധ സ്ത്രോത കാഴ്ചയും പ്രതി ഫലവും വാങ്ങാതെ ധ്യാന പ്രസംഗം നടത്താന്‍ തയാര്‍ ഉണ്ടോ? ഇങ്ങനെ സ്വരൂപിക്കുന്ന പണം എങ്ങനെ ഒക്കെ ചെലവാക്കുന്നു എന്നൊക്കെ ജെനങ്ങളെ അറിയിക്കേണ്ടത് അല്ലെ? സാധാരണ ജെനങ്ങളെ മരണാനന്തര ജീവിതത്തെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പേടി പ്പെടുത്തുന്ന കഥകള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു ഭയപ്പെടുത്തി പണം പിടുങ്ങുന്നത് ശെരിയാണോ? ഇങ്ങനെ കിട്ടുന്ന പണം കൊണ്ട് വൃദ്ധ സദനം, അനാഥ ശാലകള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ മനുഷ്യര്‍ക്ക്‌ ഉപകാരപ്പെടുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ? ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ തുടങ്ങേണ്ടത് അല്ലെ? അതോ സ്വന്തം ജീവിത നിലവാരം ഉയര്‍ത്താന്‍ മാത്രമായിട്ടു ഉപയോഗിക്കുക ആണോ? വിദേശ പണത്തിന്റെ പുളപ്പില്‍ ചില അച്ചന്മാര്‍ നാട്ടില്‍ മിന്നുന്നത് കാണുമ്പോള്‍ ഇതിനു സാധിക്കാത്ത അവരുടെ സഹ ജീവികളായ മറ്റു അച്ചന്മാരുടെ ഇടയില്‍ മുറുമുറുപ്പ് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നതു സ്വാഭാവികം. ഇങ്ങനെ അച്ഛന്മാരില്‍ തന്നെ രണ്ടു രീതിയിലുള്ള പൌരന്മാരെ നില നിര്‍ത്തുന്നത് ശെരിയാണോ?

WHY DO CATHOLICS HAVE CRUCIFIXES?
Many non-catholic Christians are uncomfortable with the display of a crucifix-a cross with an image of Christ's crucified body.They prefer to display an empty cross.If Jesus was raised from the dead,they reason,why should we depict him still on the cross?
First,we should't forget that Catholics also sometimes display simple crosses without the corpus{image of christ's body}.Next ,we must note that hystorically,discomfort with the crucifix has often had more to do with anti-Catholic sentiment than with genuine concern that Jesus'resurrection is being forgotten.Despite clear reference throught the New Testament to the importance of the cross as a sign of Christ's victory over evil{see 1 Cor 1;17-18],many early Protestants rejected any use of the cross at all-even an empty one-as a sign of "popery".
Nevertheless,those who are genuinely concerened that,in the crucifix,the resurrection is unduly overshadowed by the Crucifixion should read the messianic prophecy of Zechariah " They shall look on him whom they have thrust through,and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only son,and they shall grieve over him as one grieves over a firstborn"
(Zec 12:10).St.John confirms that this passage represents a foretelling of Christ's crucifixion(see Jn19:37).
When the people look on their crucified Lord, the prophet says God "will pour out " on them "a spirit of grace and petition" (Zec 12:10).Catholics have long found this to be true whenever they gaze with love on this image of Jesus' sacrificial death.The crucifix inspires in them the grace of a deeper gratitude for this greatest of gifts (see Ps 116:12-13),as well as a more intense aversion to sin,which led him to the cross(see Rom 6:1-12).
No wonder,then that in the old legends,the demons,vampires,and other evil creatures cannot bear to look at a crucifix.It reminds the force of darkness that they have been defeated by Christ's death on the cross(see Col 2:13-15).
Finally,we should note that when we are suffering,meditation on a crucifix comforts us by recalling that Christ suffers with us (see 2 Cor 1:5-7).Our sufferings have great value when we join them to his(see Col 1:24).
While I was reading THE NEW CATHOLIC ANSWER BIBLE,it came to my mind that the above question & answer will be very useful for all the Catholics.
