I completely agree with the observations made in the above comment. I would like to add a little more to this. I am the first Malayalee to own a professional sound system from 1985, the reason being my wife is a singer. When we started our services in Bellwood, initially there was no Sound system, and on Sundays I used to bring my own system volutarilly. Later own we purchased a small system for $700. It was this system we were using for a long time without any problem. In 1993 I and my family went to Kerala for a 5 year stay. We came back to the US in 1998. When we came back things were very different in the church. I tried to help with the Sound on Sundays. But the place was so full of politics. There was politics also in the choir. I felt my services were not welcome there. So i gradually withdrew. During the construction of the Cathedral, I was aware of the current "sound engineers" talking and discussing about the fantastic sound system we are going to have in the new church. Nobody asked my opinion. Still I many times told these people to be extreamely careful. When i heard about the budget I could not believe it. I told them everything I could to persuade them to think twice. Needless to say I was ignored all the way. Finally the inauguration day approched. I again told the person who was in charge of the sound, who is a friend of mine, to be very careful. I told him not to depend on an unproven and untested sound system for such an important occasion. I told him to install regular speakers at least for that day, as I was sure there would be problems with the new system. Nobody was willing to listen. And all of അസ്‌ know what happened. The inauguration choir was one of the worst in our church, only due to the failure of the system. After the inauguration was over, I told the current sound man, let us try a pair of regular speakers. I challenged him to let me install my own system for just one Sunday at least. They would not let me. Another time when we were doing a private choir, I inquired about putting up my own system. My request was denied. They claimed they were afraid it might damage the granite floor. No outside sound system is allowed in the church. I knew all the time the real reason. The real reason was, the interested parties did not want the people to hear a better sounding system than the one they had. I used to tease and challenge my friend to let me put my own system just for one Sunday. Then came the flood a couple of weeks ago. The sound system in the church was damaged. So for two or three Sundays regular speakers costing about $400 each was used in the church. What was the result? The sound was much better than our $125,000 system. As I mentioned, I have owned my own sound system from 1985. I did not learn sound operation by messing with church sound system like so many of our current sound guys. I have provided sound for a lot of shows and weddings and such in every kind of venue. I am saddened by the waste of money on account of our sound system. And let me also tell you, for a church even bigger than ours, the sound system will not cost more than 30 or 40 thousand dollars.

In regards to the $125,000 sound system: The true reason is that, there are too many people in Chicago, Dallas, etc., that carry too much vanity. Why do you fund these kinds of stupidity? Why can't you just not give even a cent for it? Why don't you give that money to feed the hungry children in Kerala? If you can't find any poor families there, there are plenty of them in our neighboring countries or at least in Africa. If you want an update, search for "I am because we are". You can watch it free on hulu.com and decide whether you are doing the right thing with your money. May be, if you can, ask the bad elements in the Syro diocese to watch it too. May be it will bring a change of attitude in them. Spend your money for the good of other souls.  August 22, 2010 4:45 PM

Syro Malabar Catholic synod please take note.

As Catholics we would like to restore all our sacraments back to the way it was before.

We do not want three of the sacraments Baptism, Communion and confirmation at same time.

Let our children be ready to receive the communion and confirmation at the age of 10 and 14 respectively, atleast they will have a little knowledge and it will be a great time for family togetherness and we all will learn little more about these sacraments importance.

Immoral activities in SMC ???

Why do the people in Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago churches, who do immoral things work on the alter and choir?.

Is it because sinners are welcome to the church or to show the public they are angels ???

Have you noticed the people close to the Bishop and the Achens are real problem makers in the church and the public ?

Wtihin our church and community, to establish BISHOP & ACHAN agenda {politcs} they need this kind of peoples friendship.

How we can trust these authorities?

WHEN WE WORK WITH THESE PEOPLE EVENTUALLY WE WILL LOOSE OUR FAITH.

THAT IS THE FACT BUT REMEMBER GOD IS WATCHING EVERY ONE OF US.

SO DO NOT BE AFRAID,SPEAK UP FOR THE TRUTH & JUSTICE .

GOD WON'T PUNISH FOR THAT.

AT LAST TRUTH WILL PREVAIL.

Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago consists of people from all parishes in Kerala, not just Changanacherry, Paala, kanjirappally.

This Claver and Sheela, are not even installed in every churches so far in all parts of these Changanacherry, Kanjirappally and Pala Diocese.

In any of the other Diocese than these few, no Claver exist, only Crucifix in altar.

If within Kerala itself, not all churches don't have Claver in altar, not even in Powothil's own changanacherry, palai and kanjirappally Dioceses; So what right the Bishop has to try to enforce Claver in our church altar which people really don't want to see.

The issue of Claver was problem in most of the parishes in kerala, the Bishop Synod specifically said the Bishop can't enforce the issue of Claver if the majority of parishioners disagree with Claver.

JESUS PLEASE save our Syro malabr rite from the curse of this Claver and sheela.

The politics of Chaldeanisation of Syro-Malabar church by the Oriental Congregation with the help of Mar Powathil defeated us.

Mar Powathil’s fight for the Holy Mass according to the Chaldean rite, and also the projection of the Manickeyan cross as ‘Mar Thoma cross’ was designed to stamp our church as the ‘daughter-church’ (Puthreesabha) of the Chaldean church, so that the Eastern Canon law could be enforced here.

How can our church that originated in the 1st century be the daughter-church of the Chaldean church which took birth only in the 4th century? No one gives the answer!

Our patrimony is the’ Law of Thomas’ and according to which the entire authority on temporal matters was vested in the 3tier church assemblies (Palliyogam) of the faithful.

Until and unless we succeed in bringing back this original Indian patrimony, problems will carry on erupting from the anti-biblical power structure of the church.

The origin of Kerala's Christians dates back to 52 AD, when St. Thomas came to the region landing in the port of Cranganore near Cochin. He visited different parts of Kerala and converted local inhabitants including many from the upper sect known as Namboodiri Brahmins. It is also believedthat St. Thomas established Churches in seven places in Kerala ( Kodungallore, Palayur, Paravur, Kokkamangalam, Niranam, Chayal, Korakkeni, Kollam) and a chappal (half church-"Arappalli") at Thiruvankottu.

The present Christian population have descended from these early groups. Some of the early Christians were Paklomattam, Shankarapuri, Kalli, and Kaaliyankavu in the north and Thayyil, Pattamukkil, Manki, and Madathilen near Niranam . They are popularly referred to as Syrian Christians because of the Syrian Liturgy which they continued to use in church services. They have also sometimes been called Nazaranis (followers of Jesus of Nazarene) or St. Thomas Christians. In some official documents Syrian Christians are even now referred to as Nazaranis.

An added fillip to the growth of the Church took place when a group of about 400 people migrated from Syria in 345 AD and joined the then existing Kerala Church. The leader of this group was Thomas of Kana. They stayed on in the region. The descendants of this group even today maintain their separate identity, and are known as Kananites. Syrian Christians remained as an independent group, and they got their bishops from Eastern Orthodox Church in Antioch in Syria.

What happened to the blog entry about last Sunday's sermon at Coppell church?

If that priest was fool enough to say those dumb things, he is not worth the bishop position. We need someone with gods grace to be the next bishop - not some fools that would jump everytime idiot priests wisper evil ideas.

Please put back the article and the comments. I think it should stay until that priest goes back to Coppell church and apologize to the congregation for speaking ill of the crucifix.

Dear john karikkasseril,

Catholic church considers the "blessed" bread as sacret.

We read in Holy Bible, holding the bread during the last supper Jesus said to his desciples, "This is my body which will be given up for you. Do this in memory of me".

This means sacrifice to the max. That is dying for us on the cross.

Again, we read in the Holy Bible, holding the wine he said, "This is my blood which will be shed for you, so that your sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me".

This again means sacrifice to the max. That is dying for us on the cross.

So, if you give any value to the sacrifice that Jesus did for all of us, then you should not say that crucifix is a statue.

Now, what did Jesus do with the bread and wine? Did he eat and drink it all? NOOOOOOOOOOO.

He shared it with his desciples.

Yes, he shared what he had.

Sharing what you have, and liging your life for service to others.

Isn't that what the sacrement is all about???

Anonymous said...

i agree with john karikkasseri's comments. it is true.

cross is not a thing we should adore. we should adore the jesus - whether on the cross or not - that is in our hearts. the cross and statues and pictures are suppose to be helping us to build that image in our minds just like our grand children looks at our great grand father's picture and every time they think about him that picture will come to their minds. we should not be adoring the physical part of the cross. we should respect it as it helps us. but the one and only thing that is adorable in the church is the blessed sacrament in the tubernacle or the host and wine after the consecration. cross in the church is a symbol or proclamation that the death of jesus on the cross being the ultimate sacrifice. but that doesn't make it adorable. adoring and respecting are two different words. bow your head before jesus with adoration. but be respectful to the crucifix or any statue because it is a replica and reminder of jesus. again "reminder" not he himself.ex

It is disgusting what happens in the Kerala Catholics and religious groups. We are divided by the evil forces into a number of groups and because of that the people miss the great opportunities to collaborate and make friendship beyond that will help them to be successful in America. Imagine you can only work with people of your choice of religion on weekdays!. We need to work wth multinational and diverse groups and your training on Sundays and all the group activities are just waste of time and making you unfit for your job.Did you come to America to do this?

You guys are fighting on Mar thoma cross. Now historians, including Pope are saying there is no proof for St.Thomas visiting Kerala. In a recent convention at Cochin, the head of the historic reserch center said they tried their best to find any info on St. Thomas visit, but there is no proof what so ever on his visit. Then the explanation from the priest who attended was, beliefs should be given some value, though there are no proofs. If St. Thomas never visited India, what is the importance of Marthomas Cross.

There is no history for Malayattoor church either other than the church on top on the hill.

As the years go by, some gossips turns out to be beliefs and then leads to devition. thats what happend with St. Thomas visit and starting of 7.5 churches.

Hope people will stop fighting on things that are no relevent and focus on building a community that is based on the principles Jesus taught us. love one another.

Good comment #19

We should stop worshipping these bishops who are dividing us. We should stop supporting their causes financially.Bishop is just like a manager of a business. He will do anything to benefit his business and his agendas.

LET'S LEARN FROM OUR LESSONS.

IT IS US LAITY WHO NEED TO GET ALONG WITH EACH OTHER AND SEE EACH OTHER AT CHURCH.

you are right . there is no evidence or history of the visit of st.thomas.

there is a history of thomas in the kerala christian. this is the knai thomas who came in ad 345 with all the syrian rites and probably this cross. he was concidered a saint in the keral christian community before this community ever connected to the catholics by jesuits. even now his name is mentioned in the intercessory prayers of the jocobites. he was a bishop (this a version of the history by Fr.Jose Chazhikad). when the jesuits came in they burned down the history books calling heretics and changed all what is written about thoma to st.thomas.

there is another reason we can say that mar thoma is not st.thomas but bishop thomas of knanai. none of the saints are addressed "mar" but thomas. and all the bishops in the syrian tradition are called mar too. mar angadiyath, mar vithayathil etc....

as there is no proff of st.thomas ever visited kerala there are proofs that the above things are correct. truth can never be hidden for ever.

enjoy

ecumenical crap !!!!!!!!!!!!

Cooperating and working together with other christian denominations are OK, but why do we have to let go the real Catholic fundamental characteristics like Crucifix, Sacraments receiving age, liturgy etc:.

We did not gain anything for going for this ecumenical crap, Holy Communion and Confirmation is now given along-with baptism like other protestant group do, why? liturgy is a mixture, now people are trying to force manikyan cross to catholic church, where is this going to stop?

If we are Catholics keep the fundamental things for the Catholic church, true Catholic faith matters has to be decided only by Catholics not by "crossbreeds of other christian denominations and Catholics".

Now Your roots, what you want to be, Syrian Christians of kerala?

if you want to keep your roots keep that name, don't be called Catholics at all.

We are Catholics and want to and only will follow catholic traditions.

If you are serious about knowing the facts read history. Do not listen to the sermons on Sundays where they try to clone you and ask you to share your wealth with them. Give money to those who deserve it. Not to the one who manipulates you and your friends and cause havoc in the community relations.

The Major Archbishop has invited Fr. Thomas Chakkittamuriyil to appear before the Synod on Saturday. Major Archbishop has asked Mar Angadiath to make an open apology to Fr.
