The language used in the inscriptions around the Persian Cross are Pahlavi and Syriac script. The inscription in the cross found at St. Thomas Mount is divided in to two unequal parts by a mark like “plus” sign or simple cross. The language used in the inscription is Pahlavi. The style of the letters are of that is used in the Persian empire during Sassanian dynasty( 226- 650 AD.)
This same inscription is found at another cross found in Kottayam. In Kottayam there are two crosses. The other smaller cross in Kottayam has a part of the same inscription. The other part of the small cross in Kottayam has a quotation from Galatians (V.14). This quotation is written in Estrangelo Syriac and this second cross is attributed to tenth century.
The essential characteristics of Pahlavi are the use of an Aramaic-derived script (i.e. Pahlavi script) and the high incidence of Aramaic words which are used as logograms or ideograms. This middle Iranian language or admixture was in use at the time of The Sassanian dynasty ( 226- 650 AD.)
Because of the convergence in form of many of the characters, there is a high degree of ambiguity in Pahlavi writing. Many common words were replaced by their Aramaic equivalents, which were used as ideograms. Important religious texts were sometimes transcribed into the Avestan alphabet, which was phonetically ambiguous. That causes problems in reading and transliteration and was the hindrance for the scholars in arriving on a consensus on the interpretations.
Paleographers are in agreement that the style used in lettering in the crosses found in St. Thomas Mount are of 6th century. Carbon dating ( C14) also proves that the oldest of these crosses in India, ie The Saint Thomas Cross at Mylapore is from a period of 6th or 7th century. The Cross at St. Thomas church at Mylapore seems to be the oldest, which is traced back to 650 AD by C14 dating test and may be this is as old as Anirudhapuram cross.[9]
The St. Thomas crosses at Kottyam, Kadamattam, Muttuchira, Kothanalloor and Alangad are said to be of postdate period between 6th-8th centuries. It is highly probable that the copies of the cross of Mylapore, which was an important center of trade and settlement for the migrating Christians, were later made and sent to the old churches of Malabar located in interior. These crosses are considered to be copies of the Mylapore cross on the basis of the fact all these crosses carry the same Pahlavi inscription as that of Mylapore and the churches where these crosses are found were built at a later period after 8/9th centuries ( except the Muttuchira Church )[21]
The Cross discovered from Goa is dated Seventh Century, the dating is based on the evidence of the Pahlavi inscription written on the stone in the form of an arch, which evidently speaks of an origin before the Islamisation of the Indian Ocean trade in the eight century.[22

What people are fighting for consepts based on myth and stories. There is no evidence for St. Thomas coming to Kerala. To begin with the Roman Catholic Church is an illegitimate child. Father of this church was the Roman emporor Constantine who was not a christian. I am not making this up this is history. What we have today, is an organizaion made of using the name Jesus. This organization is only good for those who control and govern this party. I feel sorry that you don't know even the fundamental of Christian history. You thought Constantine created catholic church !? You didn't even understand Davinci's code.!!
1. Catholic church is the original church established by Jesus. Read Matthew 16:16-19. Here Jesus gave authority to St.Peter to guide his church. St.Peter was the first pope of Rome. Thus catholic church was original church built on apostles.
( Not like Pentecost and protestant churches that were created only in 17th century by Martin Luther).
2. Catholics have 73 books. Martin Luther took away 6 books just because they proved his teachings were wrong. In reality He should have changed his teachings.
But protestants say that their church is the original true bible.
Martin Luther even tried to remove letter of James and Revelations but failed.
3. If catholic church and our bible is wrong, then Christianity itself was wrong for 16 centuries. Will God allow that.
4. Catholics and human civilization teach that you have to do good deeds and believe in God if you want to go to heaven. Protestants like you blindly believe that you will go to heaven just because you are Christian even if you sin,kill,rape...( It is called Faith alone). But bible and Jesus clearly says you have to do good. Read about second coming of Jesus and James etc.
5. You protestants says Bible alone is sufficient and church tradition is not required. But tell your pastor it is wrong. Protestants didn't have any tradition since they just came up recently without any teaching. But catholic church has an unbroken transfer of tradition going back centuries before Christ. How can that cross be called St. Thomas cross? The bishop has to explain these historical discrepancies before he continue with his reformation. The people here are not fools. They cannot be mislead. We need proof the cross that we venerate in the altar is a worthy one. Thus far all the evidence shows this cross is not what our bishop claims it to be. Bishop claimes this cross was brought to India by St. Thomas. No. That is not true. that cross is from 650 AD. Any replay, bishop? or his supporters?

yes if they are dated to AD, this must have been brought by the knai thoma not st.thomas. the knanaya people came from syria around that time with all the syrian traditions and all kinds of things. knai thoma might have been misunderstood by the portugese as st.thomas the apostle since knai thoma also had been concidered to be saint in the easter syrian tradition. this is what a knanaya guy told me. it seems that there had beeen some sudies about it making sense. they say knai thoma was bishop and was later called mar thoma just like all the bishops called. so all the history also described a marthoma but posrtugese or the jesuits changed the history by making mar thoma st.thomas. other wise think why only st. thomas called as mar thoma just like mar angadiyath while all the other saints called visudha??????

I really appreciate this blogs effort to lead the faithful through constructive criticism on the so-called pegan marthoma cross issue which has apparently cleared my doubts and strengthens farther my faith in Lord Jesus Christ and in the crucifix.
Now it is clear to me that we should not allow a Manichean pegan cross in our church any more. I also heard that one of the SMC-Priest mentioned in a homily in which he referred “crucified Christ is a ghost appearance only” Is it correct? Then Manicheans beliefs were also the same.
Who ever has made some money from the whole SMC is still a winner. Jump on the bandwagon and stop criticizing.The bureaucrats are stronger than you know.Majority of active writers on this are them if you see.
Lack of understanding of bible is the biggest issue for us in SMC. Our SMC leaders do not care to teach you bible in its real meaning and ourpose. They interpret everything in such a way that it will help them with their bottom line. Many people who can not help a needy person donates to to SMC churches. Have you noticed? The SMC leaders are trained to preach bible in ways that benefit them and not you. Homilies and all kinds of social activities are conducted with that goal. They are against cloning. evolution etc. But in real life, they try to clone you and make you race against each other!
The fundamental problem is not just one Bishop. It’s the whole leadership.
Most of them do not have Jesus or Cross in their heart. If they truly believe in Jesus, it doesn't matter, all of the current issues will be resolved in matter of days.
Most of us blame it on few bishops, why the cardinal and others are keeping silent? Are they blinded by the money power of these few Bishops? If they are not part of a solution, then they are part of the big problem.
Cross and curtain are only few negative modifications. I believe many other modifications adopted by the Syro Malabar are 100% wrong.

so called Fr.Vazhuthanapply no more priest now.He is a father of 2 girls and residing in Indiana USA. Unfortunately last year he got cancer and he is fighting for his life now.He was a Professor in Nostradamus University.
First of all, thank you very much for the reward-less (nothing personally for you, but lot for the community and for our belief and custom) efforts of this blog owner. Their knowledge in the area and research ability to find the facts and truth are greatly appreciated.
May I suggest a online petition to Cardinal and cc to our Bishop requesting Cardinal and bishop to take appropriate actions to install crucifix in every church and remove all curtains where there is any objection (even if they are minority it should be removed) from the parish members. Also they should work towards following the international custom of Catholic Church whatever is followed by our Pope. Mainly they must reconsider following
1. Separating baptism, first communion and confirmation.
2. Allow dead body into the church for the final farewell by the family, relatives and friends.
There is no point we are keep complaining to a deaf Bishop, his ability to hear is lost many years back. So, we should request Cardinal’s help.
Let us see how many people will sign on this petition with their USA and India address. If there is one petition, I can be the first one to sign this petition. I hope brave leaders like Tom Varkey will consider more actions to have the Cardinal to act without further delay and destroying the unity of the Church.

you say that nobody is willing to give you the official note on why st. thomas cross to be there in our alter, rather than placing the crucifix. But our bishops had issued many pastoral letters in these matters and it still continues. Recently Mar Joseph Perumthottam, archbishop of changanacherry issued one among that. Its available in the 'Madhyasthan' (Official magazine of the archdiocese) section of archdiocese's site( www.archdiocesechanganacherry.org )as a pdf file...
