ഫാ ആന്റണി - ചിക്കാഗോയുടെ സ്വന്തം ഖദ്ദാഫി (followed by Tom Varkey's Comment)

നല്ലയിടയന്‍റെ ഉപമയ്ക്കു  ഫാ ആന്റണി തുണ്ടത്തില്‍ ഈയിടെ നല്‍കിയ വ്യാഖ്യാനം യേശു ക്രിസ്തുവിനെപ്പോലും ആശ്ചര്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതായിരുന്നു. കുടുംബത്തിന്‍റെ നാഥനാണ് ഇടയന്‍, അതുപോലെതെന്നെ കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങള്‍ കുഞ്ഞാടുകളും. ഇതാണ് ഫാ. ആന്റണിയുടെ ഭാഷ്യം.

ഈ വിചിത്രമായ വ്യാഖ്യാനം കൊണ്ട് താന്‍ ചിക്കാഗോ ഇടവകയിലെ കുഞ്ഞാടുകളുടെ ഇടയനേയല്ല  എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം തുറന്നു സമ്മതിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ഇടയന്‍റെ ഒരു പരിവേഷം പോലും അണിയാതെ  സത്യം തുറന്നു പറഞ്ഞത്  അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ വ്യക്തി പ്രഭാവം എന്ന് തന്നെ കരുതാം. 

പിറകോട്ടു ചിന്തിച്ചാല്‍ ഫാ. ആന്റണി ഒരിക്കലും ചിക്കാഗോ ഇടവകക്കാര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു പിതാവോ, ഇടയനോ ആയി വര്‍ത്തിച്ചിട്ടില്ല എന്നതാണ് സത്യം. തന്‍റെ പൌരോഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ പകുതിയിലധികം കാലം അദ്ദേഹം ചിലവഴിച്ചത് ചിക്കാഗോയിലെ ഒരു കൊച്ചു സ്വേച്ഛാധിപതിയായിട്ടാണ്. നമ്മുടെ സ്വന്തം ഖദ്ദാഫിയായിട്ടു എന്ന് വേണമെങ്കില്‍ പറയാം.  ചിക്കാഗോ വികാരിയുടെ വേഷം കെട്ടി കഴിഞ്ഞ പത്തു വര്‍ഷത്തോളം അദ്ദേഹം കാഴ്ചവെച്ചത് ഏതു തഴക്കം വന്ന രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരനെയും അസൂയാലുവാക്കുന്ന പ്രകടനമായിരുന്നു. ജനങ്ങളെ ആട്ടിയും വിരട്ടിയും ഒതുക്കി  അദ്ദേഹം വെറും ഷണ്ഡന്‍മാരാക്കി. ഭീഷണിയും വിലകുറഞ്ഞ പെരുമാറ്റവും സംസാരവും അദ്ദേഹം തന്‍റെ പതിവാക്കി.  സാമാന്യ മനുഷ്യന് പോലും ചേരാത്ത അത്ര തരം താഴ്ന്ന രീതിയില്‍ ജനങ്ങളോട് പെരുമാറുന്ന സ്വഭാവം അദ്ദേഹം തന്‍റെ ഒരു സ്ഥിരം സ്റ്റൈല്‍ ആക്കി മാറ്റി. അസഹിഷ്ണുത അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ കൂടെപ്പിറപ്പാണ്. തന്‍റെ അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളോട് നൂറു ശതമാനം യോചിക്കാത്തവരെയും, എന്തെങ്കിലും കാര്യത്തില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യുന്നവരെയും തല്‍ക്ഷണം ചീട്ടു കീറി കുപ്പയില്‍ തള്ളും. 

അതേസമയം തന്‍റെ കസേരയില്‍ ഈ നീണ്ടകാലം വാണരുളാന്‍ അങ്ങാടിയത്ത് ബിഷപ്പിനെ ചാത്തന്‍ സേവ ചെയ്യാനുള്ള വിരുതും അദ്ദേഹം പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തെ വേണ്ടിടത്തൊക്കെ ചൊറിഞ്ഞു സുഖിപ്പിച്, തന്‍റെ കസേരക്ക് ഇതുവരെ വന്നിട്ടുള്ള വെല്ലുവിളികളെയൊക്കെ അദ്ദേഹം തരണം ചെയ്തു. തന്‍റെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടവരെ മാത്രം പാരിഷ് കൌണ്‍സിലിലും മറ്റു കമ്മിറ്റികളിലും തിരുകിക്കയറ്റി അദ്ദേഹം അവരോധിച്ചു. ഭക്തസംഘടകള്‍ പോലും രാഷ്ട്രീയ വല്‍ക്കരിച്ച് തന്‍റെ വരുതിക്ക് നില്‍ക്കുന്നവരെ മാത്രം അദ്ദേഹം അവയുടെ നേതൃ സ്ഥാനത്തു പ്രതിഷ്ടിച്ചു. ഒരു personality cult തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം ചിക്കാഗോയില്‍ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു. പള്ളിയിലെ സര്‍വമാന കമ്മിറ്റികളും സംഘടനകളും രാഷ്ട്രീയപാര്‍ട്ടികളുടെ പോഷക സംഘടനകള്‍ക്ക് തുല്യമാക്കി അദ്ദേഹം മാറ്റി. എല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ഓശാന പാടുന്ന fans' club കളാക്കി അദ്ദേഹം പരിവര്‍ത്തനം ചെയ്തു. 

എന്നാല്‍ തന്‍റെ ഭരണകാലത്തെ നേട്ടം എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം വീമ്പിളക്കുന്ന കത്തീദ്രല്‍ ദേവാലയത്തിന് പറയാനുള്ളത് വലിയൊരു ജനവഞ്ചനയുടെ കഥയാണ്‌. തന്‍റെ താജ് മഹാള്‍ എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം കരുതുന്ന കത്തീദ്രല്‍ പള്ളിനിര്‍മ്മാണത്തിന് പിറകില്‍ നടന്ന ഗൂഡാലോചനകളുടെയും അണിയറ രഹസ്യങ്ങളുടെയും ചുരുളുകള്‍ താമസിയാതെ ഈ പേജുകളില്‍ അഴിയുന്നതാണ്. നിലവിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു പള്ളി കണ്ടം ചെയ്ത്, അതെ കോമ്പൌണ്ടില്‍ മറ്റൊരു പള്ളി പണി തീര്‍ത്തതിനു പിറകിലെ രഹസ്യം എന്ത്? എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് പഴയ പള്ളിയെ  അവിടെ തന്നെ ഒരിടവകയായി തുടരാന്‍ അനുവദിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് പുതിയ കത്തീദ്രല്‍ ദേവാലയം സൌകര്യപ്രതമായ മറ്റൊരിടത്ത് പണിയാന്‍ അധികാരികള്‍ തുനിഞ്ഞില്ല? 

കഴിഞ്ഞ കുറെ വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി ചിക്കാഗോ സീറോ മലബാര്‍ വിശ്വാസികള്‍ക്ക് കീറാമുട്ടികളായിരുന്ന ഈ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഞങ്ങള്‍ താമസിയാതെ മറുപടി നല്‍കുന്നതാണ്.

I am greatly appalled and immensely perturbed by Fr. Antony's claims that he is said to have made to the parishioners of Chicago. Since I do not know him nor met him, I have to rely on the assessment on him by the parishioners of Chicago which I am relying on while making the following remarks. In Mt. 16, when Jesus appointed Peter to be the Shepherd of the Church, Jesus repeatedly 3 times asked Peter to feed His flock. The way our Syro-Malabar priests in the Chicago Diocese conduct themselves these days, I think they are light years away from feeding their flocks. And judging from what I hear -- the administrative style of Fr. Antony condensed in the following statement from the above block -- ഭീഷണിയും വിലകുറഞ്ഞ പെരുമാറ്റവും സംസാരവും അദ്ദേഹം തന്‍റെ പതിവാക്കി I do not think in the least that Fr. Antony has been feeding his flock.
Moreover the arrogance that characterizes Fr. Antony's administrative style is not suitable for a Christian, much less for the parish priest of a large parish like Chicago. The question that I like to ask Fr. Antony is contained in 1 Cor. 4:7: "What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?" I leave Fr. Antony with this question to answer for himself the next time he makes his arrogant statements to the parishioners of Chicago.

I have a warning too for Fr. Antony based on what happened to King Herod described in Acts 12:19-23. Here we read that King Herod very proudly ascribed to himself the glory that his people were showering on him even though he did not deserve it. In Acts 12:22 after he delivered a speech, the people shouted: "This is the voice of a god, not of a man." Immediately because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died." I sincerely hope and pray nothing like this would happen to Fr. Antony the next time he opens his mouth and speak arrogantly to the parishioners of Chicago. Most probably this won't happen because as we read in 2 Pet. 3:9: "The Lord ... is patient with us [including Fr. Antony] not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." This is the only reason why the Lord is not showing his anger towards Fr. Antony and towards us as He used to show in the Old Testament.

By the way, I was very indignant when somebody wrote as a commentary to my previous article (the one on Fr. Joji saying that whether it is Easter or Christmas ...) that I should be the next Cardinal and I am very knowledgeable about the Bible, etc. I totally disown any such credit. And you know why? I am scared that what happened to King Herod that I described above may happen to me also if I do not make this disclaimer. Jut give God all the glory where it rightfully belongs. I am merely a jar of clay (2 Cor. 4:7) in which God through His infinite mercy towards me even though I do not deserve it, has filled some of His divine wisdom which I am sharing with my brothers who have stood with me over the years to wage this battle for the Crucifix for the greater glory of the Savior who hung on the Crucifix. I am confident that Jesus Christ will continue to give us all the strength and grace to eradicate the Mar Thoma Cross idol from the landscape of the Syro-Malabar Church not only in the U.S. but also in Kerala. Let us pray continually for this and also for God to give repentance to our arrogant priests like Fr. Antony who do not know what they are doing or saying often times in their misplaced zeal for promoting their claver agenda. Let our prayer be the one Jesus recited lying on the Cross: "Fr. forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."
