Even though I thoroughly enjoyed reading about how the present Syro-Malabar hierarchy has been evolved over the years tracing its roots to its connection with St. Thomas Christians of the early churches, I would like to alert my brothers and sisters with a little warning here. Our focus is Jesus Christ and nothing but Jesus Christ. We should not be too much preoccupied with insignificant details pertaining to liturgy such as which way the priest should turn during the Holy Mass, etc.
In defense of substantiating my arguments, I would like to point out two verses from the Bible. In Col. 2:8 Paul warns us: "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ." Then in Titus 3:9 again Paul warns us: "Avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless." I would like to elaborate a little on Titus 3:9 by saying that being preoccupied with establishing connections with the so-called heavy weights within the Syro-Malabar Church is counterproductive and useless. Satan will try to divert our attention from our Savior by changing our focus away from Him. Typical example is the attempt to impose the Mar Thoma Cross on us which is a philosophy based not on Christ but on the personality of St. Thomas. Who cares? As long as we have Jesus, we don't have to worry about human personalities and therefore we should not allow them to distract us from our faith. The Crucifix and the Word of God is what keeps us focused on Christ and we should guard our focusing from distractions whether they are based on traditions or human philosophies. When we do this we get carried away and fall off the boat of our faith like the example of Fr. Antonio, the Italian priest about whom recently we heard about the CD in which he was calling Amritabhai Devi Amma as the Gateway to Heaven.

Unlike the Idolatrous Mar Thoma Cross, the Crucifix Is Most Essential for our Salvation – Tom Varkey
This article is in response to the question posed by the reader who was asking “TO WHOM DID JESUS ASK TO LIFT HIM UP ON THE CRUCIFIX?” By your question I am assuming that you want to know if Jesus’ command in Jn. 3:14 applies to us or not. The answer is a resounding “Yes” based on the Word of God and here are my arguments. In Mt. 7:22-23 we read: “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” From this verse, it is clear that knowing the Lord Jesus is the key to go to heaven as Jesus is saying this after telling us that it is not those who call Him ‘Lord, Lord’ who will be entering the kingdom of heaven. There are also other verses in the Bible that state this same thing. To look at another example, in Jn. 10:14-15 Jesus says: “I know my sheep and my sheep know me just as the Father knows me and I know the Father … .” So the identifying mark of those who belong to Jesus Christ is that they should know Jesus through an intimate relationship.
If this is so, the next question is: ‘How can we know Jesus Christ in an intimate way?’ Let us try to answer this question by examining the Word of God. In 1 Cor. 2:2 Paul says: “I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” Thus according to Paul, to know Christ we have to know the Crucified Savior and not any other Christ. Paul explains this in more detail in Phil. 3:10-11 where he says: “I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, and so, somehow to attain to the resurrection from the dead.” Paul wanted to know Christ intimately by knowing Him with regard to His sufferings so much so that he wanted to identify with Him in His death. He fully believed that this is the only way he could become a participant in Christ’s resurrection.
Paul had this unquenchable thirst to know Christ through His sufferings. No wonder he writes in Gal. 6:14: “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world as been crucified to me, and I to the world.” For Paul the only means to know Jesus Christ in His sufferings and death was “the cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ” which is the Crucifix. We saw above how knowing the Crucified Jesus and not any other Jesus is the key to go to heaven. Here we see Paul saying to us that the only thing that can help us in knowing the crucified Jesus is the Crucifix. That is why he valued it so highly as to see everything else not worthy of boasting except the Crucifix. Nothing else could help Paul to know the Crucified Savior like His image on the cross which we call the Crucifix. It is quite evident that the Mar Thoma Cross does not measure up to this because it does not remind us about the crucifixion and death of Jesus in the way Crucifix does.

Now the next question that naturally comes to our mind is ‘What did Peter think of the Crucifix?’ We do not have any specific verse in the Bible that talks about what kind of devotion Peter had towards the Crucifix. But it is a well-known historical fact that Peter asked to be crucified upside down when he was sentenced to be crucified. We have reason to believe that the image of the Savior hanging on the Crucifix was so vivid in his mind that he considered himself to be unworthy to be crucified like his Lord. It was unthinkable for him to imagine himself on a cross just as Jesus was. But a more probable reason is that Peter, like Paul was absolutely convinced that for a Christian knowing Christ in His sufferings by focusing on the Crucifix for meditation and prayer is vital for his eternal salvation. Therefore he did not want to be a distraction to anyone who was seeking to do so by indirectly competing with Jesus for attention by becoming another person also crucified like His Master and Lord. Paul’s way of knowing Christ was by focusing on the Crucifix so that he could know Him in His sufferings. He was convinced that this was the only way to attain eternal salvation by experiencing the power of Jesus’ resurrection through the knowledge of Him in His sufferings as he says in Phil. 3:10-11. Paul tells us that this is the only way of truly knowing Christ. Otherwise why else would he resolve to know nothing except Him Crucified as he says in 1 Cor. 2:2? And we know that knowing Jesus the right way is absolutely necessary because in Jn. 10:14-15 Jesus says: “I know my sheep and my sheep know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father”. Those who do not know Christ the right way are not His sheep.
In Acts 26:29 he says: “I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am.” Paul desires that we know Jesus Christ in the same way that he sought to know Him because he knew well that it is the only way to make sure that we can become participants in His resurrection. Now everyone will agree with me that displaying the Crucifix in our places of worship will constantly be a reminder about the death and sufferings of Christ whether it is in the church or in the home. Even if we assume that the Mar Thoma Cross is not an idol, when it comes to knowing Christ in His sufferings, the Mar Thoma Cross is no match for the Crucifix. It does not have the figurative image of the body of Christ on it to remind us of His death and sufferings in the way the Crucifix does. Peter endorses everything that Paul says in all the epistles including 1 Cor. 2:2 and Gal. 6:14. He writes in 2 Pet. 3:16: “His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.” In other words here Peter is saying that if we do not believe what Paul has written about the most urgent need of knowing Christ through the Crucifix, we will be doomed for all eternity.
Having the figurative image of Jesus on His Cross is so essential for us to be reminded of the sufferings and death of Jesus. Jesus Himself knew this and therefore He gave us the command in Jn. 3:14 to lift Him up “just as Moses raised the bronze serpent in the desert”. He thought it to be essential that we have the Crucifix in our places of worship for us to know Him in the same way that He knew His Father which is the “knowing standard” that Jesus has set up for us to qualify to be His sheep. Yet the claver maniacs want us to believe that there is no difference between the idolatrous Mar Thoma Cross and the Crucifix. There are few heresies greater than this. Based on the above theological arguments , I have to tell you that if we believe the heresy of the claver maniacs, it will be a sure passport to hell.

In Jn. 3:14-15 Jesus tells us: “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.” So TO WHOM DID JESUS ASK TO LIFT HIM UP ON THE CRUCIFIX?” The answer is right here in this verse: whoever wants to “have eternal life”. Are you one of those who want to have eternal life by going to heaven? Then you MUST lift up the Son of Man on the Crucifix and try to know Him on a personal level. The personal level is: to the level Jesus knew His Father and to the level Paul tried to know Him by knowing Him through the Crucifix as he tells us in 1 Cor. 2:2 and Gal. 6:14. The second reason why the Crucifix is absolutely essential for our salvation was explained in my previous article which is for the forgiveness of sins. This purpose of the Crucifix is implied in Jesus’ command in Jn. 3:14 because just as the serpent was intended for those who were bitten by the snakes to regain life, the Crucifix was intended for us as an instrument of getting back our spiritual intimacy with Jesus whenever we lose it through sin. In conclusion: “TO WHOM DID JESUS ASK TO LIFT HIM UP ON THE CRUCIFIX?” The complete answer is: To whoever wants to go to heaven AND to whoever wants to have forgiveness of sins which includes all of us.

The mother cooked the food in the family and all the family members ate the food. In the same way, the food should be cooked [[by the cook(s)]] so that numerous thousands of people in the wedding-feast may eat food. All those numerous thousands of people who eat the food don’t have to cook.
In the same way as TOM VARKEY said below in his article/posting, ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO BE SAVED DON’T HAVE TO LIFT UP THE SON OF MAN ON THE CRUCIFIX. THAT IS MISLEADING.
