At first I was shocked about Fr. Jojy’s compliments praising the Syro-Malabar church in Garland. But then what else can you expect from the devotees of the Mar Thoma Cross?
Based on the Word of God, praising the Garland Church is like praising the rapists who recently raped a medical student in Delhi and later on died in Singapore. Only difference is it is even worse. It was utterly disgusting both from the perspective of God as well as the parishioners of Garland and the whole Syro-Malabar Church. In fact complimenting the Garland Church is more gross and nauseating than praising the rapists in Delhi. Let us compare the two to draw some analogies between complimenting the rapists in Delhi and praising the church in Garland.
In the case of the rapists, they certainly violated the sixth commandment of God which prohibits adultery. Thus they disobeyed a great commandment of God. In the case of complimenting the Garland Church, according to Jer. 2:13, the masterminds behind the design and construction of the Garland church violated two commandments of God. In Jer. 2:13 God says: “My people have committed two crimes: One they have abandoned me, the source of living waters. Secondly, they have dug broken cisterns (wells) which cannot hold water. Certainly by rejecting the Crucifix in stubborn disobedience to Christ (Jn. 3:14) and the Pope and erecting the claver cross, this is exactly what Fr. Jojy, His Excellency Bishop Angadiath and Fr. Koruth have done. They have broken two commandments of God. Jesus has clearly asked us to raise up His image “just as Moses raised the serpent in the desert”. Fr. Jojy has not only refused to obey Jesus Christ but has erected the sacrilegious ‘Mar Thoma Cross’ in the sacred sanctuary of the Garland church which is man-made and closely similar to the golden calf which Aaron molded for the Israelites while Moses had gone up Mount Sinai. It was done also contrary to the Pope’s directives regarding the Crucifix in his book on Worship and liturgy, namely “The Spirit of Liturgy”.
Another reason why praising the Garland church and its architecture was more wrong than praising the rapists who committed the most heinous crime of rape in Delhi and throwing her body mutilated body out from a running bus is the fact that in this case, the public could demonstrate and express their feelings in protest with positive results. But in the case of Fr. Jojy and His Excellency Bishop Mar Angadiath desecrating the Garland Church sanctuary, the community around the Garland church who had worked tirelessly to build up this church and the surrounding community had no voice in deciding the design of the sanctuary. This is true even though the Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath had promised in Coppell that he would not impose the claver cross anywhere in any community in his Diocese only days before this crime was carried out in Garland. In the case of the Delhi rape incident, action is being taken as a result of the widespread demonstrations and protests by the women who have been humiliated and dehumanized by this incident. On the other hand in Garland, the believers had no choice but to abandon the church which they worked for so many years and go to nearby Latin churches. If this is not outrageous, what else is?
Finally, the consequences of the rape incident in Delhi has for the most part short-term effects. But the desecration of the Garland church sanctuary has eternal consequences. Jesus said in Mt. 18 that it is better for one to tie a millstone around his neck and plunge himself into the depths of the sea than to cause scandal to a believer. The designing of the Garland church has scandalized the whole Syro-Malabar church and it has made many lose their faith including a very reputed priest in the Syro-Malabar Church, namely Fr. Mathew Sasseril who publicly admitted that he lost his faith after he joined the Syro-Malabar Diocese of Chicago.
Well, what can we say in conclusion? Once again it goes to prove that God’s Word in Rom. 1:22 is so true: “Claiming to be wise, they became fools.” The compliments that Fr. Jojy showered on the glories of the Garland Church were nothing but blasphemous and in extreme bad taste which would make any Syro-Malabar Catholic throw up in disgust. No wonder many of them decided to change the church and go to the nearby Latin churches to preserve their faith and even their mental health. I am sure it was too much for them to handle as it was for Fr. Sasseril, the previous vicar of St. Alphonsa Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Coppell.

I'm a Malayali Latin Catholic born and brought up in Delhi and Bombay and married to a Portuguese Mestizo from Cochin. Therefore, I have no affliction with the so-called "Claver", "mar thoma" cross..which you guys claim to be manicheian despite the fact that most archeologists state there is no proof of a manicheian settlement in Kerala...
I don't see why you all are making such a big deal about a cross. There are many different types of crosses. But anyway, you can protest against the placing of the claver cross on the altar..but don't compare a priest's statements about the claver cross to the actions of the inhumane rapists of Delhi!!!!!!
