ഡേവിഡ് മാത്തുക്കുട്ടി ചുമക്കുന്ന കുരിശിന്‍റെ പൊള്ള ന്യായങ്ങളും ടോം വര്‍ക്കിയുടെ ഭാരമേറിയ കുരിശിന്‍റെ കഥന കഥകളും നാം ഇതിനകം ഒരു ചിന്താ വിഷയമാക്കിയല്ലോ. ഒരു പക്ഷെ ഈ കുരിശിനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ധാരണ ജനങ്ങളില്‍ വ്യത്യസ്ത കാഴ്ചപ്പാട് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.. ഈ അടുത്ത കാലത്തായി കേരളത്തിലെയും അതുപോലെ ഈ വിഷയം ,വിദേശരാജ്യങ്ങളിലെയും അധിവാസികളായ കേരള കത്തോലിക്കരുടെ ഇടയിലും സീറോമലബാര്‍ സഭാ വൈദികരുടെയും മെത്രാന്മാരുടെയും ഇടയിലും കടുത്ത വിമര്‍ശനങ്ങള്‍ക്കും, പരിചിന്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്കും കാരണമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. .
ഇതിനു കാരണം കാണുന്നത് ഇതാണ്,കുരിശിനെ പ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ,അതെ, യേശു ക്രിസ്തു വധിക്കപ്പെട്ട വി.കുരിശിനെപ്പറ്റി വൈവിദ്ധ്യവും വൈരുദ്ധ്യവും നിറഞ്ഞ പ്രബോധനങ്ങള്‍ പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുവാന്‍ സഭാധികാരികളായ ചില മെത്രാന്മാരും വൈദികരും ശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്നതാണ്. എന്താണ് കുരിശു , എന്തിനു വേണ്ടി അത് ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു എന്നൊക്കെ നമുക്ക് ചരിത്രങ്ങള്‍ നമുക്ക് കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നു.. തോമ്മാക്കുരിശും ,പത്രോസ് കുരിശും കല്‍ദായ കുരിശും അതുമല്ലെങ്കില്‍ വിമര്‍ശന ബിന്ദുവായ ക്ലാവര്‍ കുരിശും ഒന്നും ക്രിസ്ത്യാനിയുടെ തലച്ചോറിന്‍റെ ഇടത്തെ വശത്ത്‌ വച്ചു സ്വയം ക്രൂശിക്കപ്പെടെണ്ടതില്ല എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നു. മിസ്റ്റര്‍ ഡേവിഡ് മാത്തുക്കുട്ടി കുരിശിന്‍റെ നാള്‍വഴി ചരിത്രം എവിടെനിന്നെങ്കിലും വാങ്ങി പഠിക്കണം. നേരെ മറിച്ചു , ആര്‍ക്കും പിടി കിട്ടാത്ത കുറെ ബൈബിള്‍ വാക്യങ്ങള്‍ എഴുതി ഓളം വച്ചു ടോം വര്‍ക്കിയെപ്പോലെയുള്ള വരെ ബേജാറാക്കിയാല്‍, ആ പരാക്രമം മരത്തില്‍ കയറിപ്പറ്റി യിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഓന്തിന്‍റെ സ്വയം നിറം മാറ്റലിലൂടെയുള്ള ഒരു സാഹസം മാത്രമേ ആകൂ.

എന്താണ് നാം ഒക്കെ ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്ന കുരിശു? നമുക്ക് ഒരു പ്രസിദ്ധ ചരിത്ര നിരീക്ഷണം നോക്കാം.: മദ്ധ്യ പൂര്‍വ്വ ദേശത്തു കുറ്റവാളികള്‍ക്ക് വധ ശിക്ഷ നല്‍കാന്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന ഉപകരണമായിരുന്നു കുരിശു. കൈ വിരിച്ചു നില്‍ക്കുന്ന മനുഷ്യന്‍റെ ആകൃതിയുള്ള കുരിശില്‍ തറച്ചുള്ള മരണം കൊലപാതകം പോലുള്ള വലിയ കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യുന്നവര്‍ക്കുള്ള ശിക്ഷാ രീതിയായിരുന്നു.റോമാ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തില്‍ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യപ്പോരാളികളെ രാജ്യ ദ്രോഹികളെന്നു മുദ്രയടിച്ച് കുരിശില്‍ തൂക്കി കൊല്ലാന്‍ വിധിച്ചിരുന്നു.ശിക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ട വ്യക്തി ,തന്നെ
ക്രൂശിക്കാനുള്ള കുരിശുകൂടി ചുമന്നുകൊണ്ട് വധസ്ഥലത്തേക്കു പോകണം .സാധാരണഗതിയില്‍ കുറുകെയുള്ള ഭാഗം മാത്രം കൊണ്ടുപോയാല്‍ മതിയായിരുന്നു.നെടുകെ നാട്ടി നിറുത്താനുള്ള ഭാഗം വധ സ്ഥലത്ത് തന്നെയുണ്ടാകും.യേശുനാഥന്‍ മുഴുവന്‍ കുരിശും ചുമന്നുകൊണ്ടുപോയതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.യേശുവിന്‍റെ കുരിശുമരണത്തോടെ കുരിശിനു പുതിയൊരു മാനം ലഭിച്ചു.ഭീതിയുടെയും മരണത്തിന്‍റെയും നിഴലില്‍ നിന്ന് ഉയര്‍പ്പിന്‍റെയും പ്രത്യാശയുടെയും രക്ഷയുടെയും നിത്യജീവന്‍റെയും പ്രതീകമായി കുരിശു മഹത്വവല്‍ക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.-ഇതാണ് കുരിശിനെപ്പറ്റി നാം അറിയേണ്ടുന്ന അടിസ്ഥാന ജ്ഞാനം. ഇതിനെയെല്ലാം മറച്ചു പിടിച്ചു ചില മെത്രാന്മാരും ,അവരുടെ ആജ്ഞാനുവര്‍ത്തികളും കൂടി ചില ലൌകിക ലാഭത്തിനായി നടത്തുന്ന പ്രചാരണവും തെറ്റാണ്. കുരിശിനെ വിശ്വാസി സമൂഹത്തില്‍ വൈരുദ്ധ്യം നിറഞ്ഞ അര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു അലംകോല പ്പെടുത്തിയതുമായ കാര്യമാണ് മാര്‍ത്തോമ്മ കുരിശുവാദവും കല്‍ദായ കുരിശും. ഇതിനെയാണ് ടോം വര്‍ക്കിയും എന്നെപ്പോലെയുള്ളവരും സംശയ ദൃഷ്ടിയോടെ വീക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്. ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ യോഹന്നാനും മത്തായിയും ഒക്കെ എന്ത് പറയുന്നു എന്നൊക്കെ മാത്തുക്കുട്ടി വചനം പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഇതിനു പരിഹാരമല്ല.

വിശുദ്ധബലി അര്‍പ്പിക്കുമ്പോള്‍
ധരിക്കുന്ന കാപ്പാ മുതല്‍ വിശുദ്ധ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളില്‍വരെ സാത്താന്‍റെ ചിച്നംമാണ് നമുക്ക് ദര്‍ശിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുക .
എന്തിനുപറയുന്നു ഇവറ്റകളുടെ ഫോട്ടോവരെ വേദ ബുക്കുകളില്‍ കയറ്റിയിരിക്കുന്നു .
എന്തൊരു അനീതിയാണ്
ഈ നാറികള്‍ ചെയ്തുകൂട്ടുന്നത് .
അമ്മയെ കൊന്നാലും പക്ഷം ചേരാന്‍ ഒരുകൂട്ടര്‍ കാണും , അതുപോലെ എന്ത് തെണ്ടിത്തരം ഇവറ്റകള്‍ ചെയ്താലും ആ ഭക്ഷത്തും കൂടാന്‍ കുറെ കല്‍ദായ നാറികളും ഉണ്ട് .
ഈ പവ്വത്തിലിനെയും ആലഞ്ചേരിയെയും ഒക്കെ ഒരു കാരണവശാലും സഭയില്‍ തുടരാന്‍ അനുവദിച്ചു കൂടാത്തതാണ് .
ഈ ആലഞ്ചേരിയുടെ സഹോദരന്‍ അച്ഛന്‍ കൊപ്പേല്‍ പള്ളിയില്‍ കുര്‍ബാന മധ്യേ പറഞ്ഞത് എല്ലാവരും
കേട്ടതല്ലേ , ചത്ത ശവം കെട്ടിത്തൂക്കി ആരാധിക്കുന്നുവെന്നു .
ആ മാന്യന്‍ ഒരു വൈദികനാണോ ?.

why do we say we want to see only Crucifix in the alter?
Mass in the Catholic Church.
The Council of Trent reaffirmed traditional Christian teaching that the Mass is the same Sacrifice of Calvary offered in an unbloodied manner:
"The victim is one and the same: the same now offers through the ministry of priests, who then offered himself on the cross; only the manner of offering is different.
And since in this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and offered in an unbloodied manner... this sacrifice is truly propitiatory" (Doctrina de ss. Missae sacrificio, c. 2, quoted in Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1367).
The Council declared that Jesus instituted the Mass at his Last Supper: "He offered up to God the Father His own body and blood under the species of bread and wine; and, under the symbols of those same things, He delivered (His own body and blood) to be received by His apostles, whom He then constituted priests of the New Testament; and by those words, Do this in commemoration of me, He commanded them and their successors in the priesthood, to offer (them); even as the Catholic Church has always understood and taught."
The Catholic Church sees the Mass as the most perfect way it has to offer latria (adoration) to God.
The Church believes that "The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it."
It is also Catholic belief that in objective reality, not merely symbolically, the wheaten bread and grape wine are converted into Christ's body and blood, a conversion referred to as transubstantiation, so that the whole Christ, body and blood, soul and divinity, is truly, really, and substantially contained in the sacrament of the Eucharist.
With crucifix in the alter the whole picture about real mass will be clear to us all.
This why we say we want to see only Crucifix in the alter all the time nothing else.

This is the real TRUTH nothing but the real TRUTH about CRUCIFIX ,so be it , if not find other churches like protastant churches . If you can't see crucifix in the catholic alter you may be a devil worshipper, so by the way who is your GOD ?

What the Syro-Malabar Church Hierarchy Needs Is Not a Ton of Theology But An Ounce of Obedience -- Tom Varkey
A few months ago I was on a flight home from Los Angeles, CA to Dallas, TX. To make a long story short, I was engaged in a conversation about the Bible with a Jewish lady sitting in my next seat. Even after repeated attempts on my part to persuade her to read the Bible, she kept on saying that for her, Bible reading has no value at all for her spiritual life. She argued that the Jewish faith offered all the answers and nothing else mattered to her including Christianity. As a final invitation to her, I asked her, “Madam, why don’t you give it a try reading the Bible starting with Romans Ch. 8 and reading it every day for two weeks and then if it did not make any impact on you, you can quit after that.” Seeing that even that last straw I threw at her did not work, I was saddened and went back to the ‘small talk’ that we had started with.
When I read Mathukutty’s answer to my response to his challenge, I was reminded of the above experience. It would appear from Mathykutty’s response that where I went wrong is I quoted from the wrong version of the Bible or something like that. I have bad news for Mathukutty. The reason why our Bishop Powathil and Angadiath are not willing to obey the truth of Jn. 3:14 in the Bible is not because they are not following the right translation of the Bible. Their problem is the same as that of the Jewish lady above. There is a reason why of all the passages in the Bible I suggested Rom. Ch. 8. In consider this as the most important chapter in the whole Bible starting with the first verse: “The law of the Holy Spirit has freed us from the law of sin and death.” In order to understand the Bible as well as to be guided in godliness, we have to come under the law the Holy Spirit. And in order to do that we must commit ourselves to obey the Word of God. The following are a few verses that make this point clear.
In Acts 5:32 we read that God gives the Holy Spirit to those ho obey Him. In Mt. 11:27 Jesus tells us that “No one knows the Father except the Son and whomever the Son chooses to reveal Him.” In Ps. 119:100 there is a very important truth about what happens when we obey God. Here the psalmist says: “I have more understanding than all the elders for I obey your precepts.” The list goes on. But you get the gist! Unless we come into this spiritual realm by accepting and obeying the Word of God, we can never get our spiritual house in order. In Hebr. 5 we read that Jesus learned obedience through suffering and thus He has BECOME A SOURCE OF LIFE FOR THOSE WHO OBEY. That is why in my previous article I called the children of the Mar Thoma Cross കാലുകള് ചത്തുമരവിച്ച വെറും തവളകള്’. Because without an unconditional and total commitment to obey the Word of God in its entirety, one cannot partake of the life of Christ that flows into us through the Holy Spirit and we all become like frogs with incapacitated legs. It is not because I get any kind of pleasure in calling my most beloved brothers and sisters who believe in the Mar Thoma Cross by a name that I know is offensive to many of them. As we saw in my previous article in response to Mathukutty I quoted in Tit. 1:15-16: “To those who are pure, everything is pure.” This verse also reveals another great truth: If one makes a commitment to believe and obey every other verse in the Bible but deliberately disobeys Jn. 3:14, then such a Christian falls under the category of those who are impure. Because in order to qualify as pure in the eyes of God, we must accept everything as pure WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

Now, people like Mathukutty may think that the problem is reading the Word of God from the wrong version of the Bible. If that is the case, His Excellency Bishop Powathil and Bishop Angadiath would have never got it wrong. Because they probably read only Catholic Bible versions and wouldn’t even go near a Protestant Translation like King James Version or any other non-Catholic version of the Bible. In the Bible there is even an example of a donkey who was obeying God advising a disobedient prophet Balaam in Num. 22:30. The reason why the donkey was wiser in the eyes of God than the prophet was that it was willing to obey God and the Prophet was not. Thus obedience and commitment to obey God and the Word of God makes all the difference in the world because God gives the Holy Spirit to only those who obey whether it is a donkey or a prophet or an ordinary person like me. I know for sure that all the spotlight I have been recently getting through this Blog is totally undeserved because all the glory belongs to God and God alone.
Last but not the least I like to point out an example or two for the fact that unless we have the Holy Spirit we cannot understand the Word of God which is what I started out with. A good example of this is found in Lk. 24:37 where we see the Apostles saying that they were seeing a ghost when the Risen Christ appeared to them. This incident becomes compellingly convincing when we consider the backdrop of this utterance by the Apostles. Jesus had already appeared to many others including Mary Magdalene. He had just appeared to the disciples going to Emmaus and they were back narrating the very story about the experience they had in Emmaus where they recognized the Risen Christ in the breaking of the bread. As they were narrating their experience, Jesus came and stood in their midst. But still they did not believe in Him and thought it was a ghost. They did not even believe that it was the ghost of Jesus. But everything changed drastically with Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles. It was not because they just received the proper version of the Bible because there was no Bible at that time.
As I said in my previous article “Children of the Mar Thoma Cross: … God Calls Them ‘Losers’”, Crucifix makes all the difference in the three comparisons I made: 1) the Latin Church and the Syro-Malabar Church; 2) the era of the Syro-Malabar Church when it had the Crucifix as its only Cross before Bishop Powathil introduced the Mar Thoma Cross and the era after he introduced it; and 3) how the congregations and the church leaders are comparatively much more peaceful and less confrontational and less corrupt in all the other dioceses in the entire Syro-Malabar Church where there is less attack against the Crucifix than in the Syro-Malabar Diocese in Chicago, USA. Stated in a different way, less attack against the Crucifix simply means more obedience to the Word of God in Jn. 3:14. And more obedience means God raining in more of His Spirit which induces life into the Church. Thus in order for the Syro-Malabar Church of today to become closer and closer to the heart of God, it has to become Spirit-filled. And the way it can do that is to obey Jn. 3:14 by putting an end to its hostility towards the Crucifix. Its leaders today including His Beatitude George Alenchery don’t realize that “the proof is in the pudding”. They stubbornly refuse to look at what is going on in the Latin Church where the grass is so much greener humanly speaking. Let us pray for the day when our leaders will also receive the same divine wisdom displayed by an obedient donkey that once inspired a disobedient prophet Balaam in Num. 22:30. This will happen when they realize that what the Syro-Malabar Church hierarchy needs today is not a ton of theology but an ounce of obedience to the Word of God.

മെത്രാന്മാരെയും വൈദികരെയും യേശുവിനെക്കാള്‍ പ്രമുഖരാക്കുന്ന ഭയ ഭക്തി ബഹുമാനങ്ങള്‍ ആണോ യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ ദൈവ വിശ്വാസം എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്?അതല്ലെങ്കില്‍ സഭാ വിശ്വാസം എന്നൊക്കെ വിളിക്കുന്നത്? ഇത് പറയാന്‍ എന്നെ തോന്നിപ്പിച്ചത് , മാര്‍ പവ്വത്തിലിനെ സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗീയ മഹത്വത്തില്‍ ഒന്‍പതു വൃന്ദം മാലാഖാമാരുടെ "മാലാഖയും" " സഭാമനുഷ്യനും " ( എക്ലെഷ്യല്‍ പെര്‍സണ്‍)എന്നൊക്കെ ആരോ വിവര ദോഷികള്‍ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് പതിവായിരിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു മെത്രാന്‍ എന്ന വ്യക്തിയും ഒരു സാധാരണ സഭാംഗവും തമ്മില്‍ എന്ത് വ്യത്യസ്ഥത ഇരിക്കുന്നു? അല്മായാനും ഒരു ഒരു സുപ്രധാന ദൈത്യം സഭാ രംഗത്ത് ചെയ്യുവാനുണ്ട്. സഭയുടെ പ്രധാന കാതല്‍ അല്മായര്‍ ആണ് എന്ന് ഫാ. മൂലയില്‍ വായിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് ഇത്തരം പുകഴ്ത്തലുകള്‍ ഒഴിവാക്കാന്‍ കാരണം ആക്കും എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നുണ്ട് .സഭ, അല്‍മായരും എക്ലെഷ്യല്‍ വിഭാഗവും ചേര്‍ന്നതാണ് എന്ന് നാം പഠിക്കുന്നല്ലോ. അപ്പോള്‍ മാര്‍ പൌവ്വത്തിലിനെ വ്യക്തിസഭയുടെ വക്താവും പിതാവും ,രാജകുമാരനും പ്രധാന മന്ത്രിയും ഒക്കെ ആയി പരിവര്‍ത്തനം ചെയ്തു നീട്ടി വലിച്ചു കാണിച്ചു ,ഒടുവില്‍ ഒരു രൂപക്കൂടും നേര്‍ച്ചപ്പെട്ടിയും കൂടി പണിത് വയ്ക്കാന്‍ പണി ഓര്‍ഡര്‍ ഇപ്പോഴേ നല്‍കരുത് .പൌവ്വത്തില്‍ ജനിക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പും യേശുവില്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ജനത കേരളത്തിലും മറ്റു എല്ലാ ദേശങ്ങളിലും ഉണ്ട്.

നേഴ്സുമാരുടെ അവകാശ സമരം .-തോമസ്‌ മാത്യു
തൃശൂരിലെ നേഴ്സുമാര്‍ നടത്തുന്ന സമരം ,ഒരു അന്യായ അവകാശ സമരമല്ലാ എന്ന് കോടതി വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. ആ സമരം അന്യായ സമരവുമല്ലാ. ആരോഗ്യമേഖലയില്‍ എല്ലാ മതവിഭാഗങ്ങളിലും പെട്ടവരുടെ ആശുപത്രികള്‍ ഏറെക്കാലം മുതലേ കേരളത്തിലും അന്യ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ആശുപത്രികള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ വിവിധ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും വിവിധ വ്യത്യസ്ഥ രീതിയില്‍ നഴ്സുമാര്‍ക്ക് ശമ്പളം കൊടുക്കുന്നു . എന്നാല്‍ ഒരു ഡോക്ടര്‍ക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്ന ശമ്പളം വിദൂര മടങ്ങ്‌ കൂടുതല്‍ ആണ്. കേരളത്തിലെ സ്വകാര്യ ആശുപത്രി ഉടമകളുടെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടില്‍ നഴ്സുമാരെ ഒരു തരം അടിമകള്‍ ആയി കണ്ടു. ഒരു നാല്‍പ്പതു വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പ് ഒരു സ്വകാര്യ ആശുപത്രിയിലെ ഒരു ഡോക്ടര്‍ ഏതാണ്ട് പതിനായിരം രൂപ പ്രതിഫലം പറ്റുമ്പോള്‍ മാനേജര്‍ നഴ്സിന് കൊടുത്തത് ഭക്ഷണവും പുറമേ മാസ്സ ശബളമായി നൂറു നൂറ്റി അമ്പതു രൂപയും ആയിരുന്നു.കത്തോലിക്കാ ആശുപത്രികള്‍ ഇതിനെ പ്രേഷിത സേവനമായി മാത്രം കണ്ടു ന്ഴ്സുമാരെക്കൊണ്ട് രാത്രിയും പകലും ജോലി ചെയ്യിപ്പിച്ചു. ഈയൊരു അവസ്ഥയില്‍ ഇക്കാലത്തും വലിയ മാറ്റം ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല. മാറ്റം ഉണ്ടാവണം. നഴ്സുമാര്‍ ചെയ്യന്ന ജോലിക്ക് സമൂഹവും മത നേതൃത്വങ്ങളും ആശുപത്രി ഉടമകളും സര്‍ക്കാരും മറ്റുള്ള സേവന രംഗം പോലെ നഴ്സുമാരുടെ തൊഴിലിനേയും മാന്യ പദവിയില്‍ അംഗീകരിക്കണം.സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ തലത്തില്‍ ശക്തമായ തൊഴില്‍-വേതന സംരക്ഷണം നഴ്സുമാര്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കിയെ മതിയാവൂ.

Crucifix: Not Merely a Symbol of Salvation and Eternal Life; It is the Source of Both – Tom Varkey
After reading the Malayalam article of Brother George Kuttikkattu under the title: “[Crucifix] the Symbol of Salvation and Eternal Life”, I completely agree with what Bro. George has to say. But at the same time, it left in my mind a feeling that this article does not give the importance the Crucifix rightfully deserves based on the Word of God. To illustrate my point, let me use an example. A Cadillac car can be used as a luxury vehicle for transporting passengers and thus its user getting the maximum mileage out of it with regard to its intended purpose. But suppose I choose to use it to raise chickens, nobody can stop me from doing it since it is my car and I have the right to use it in whatever way I choose to use it. Only thing is it will be such a gross misuse of the Cadillac which is a symbol of excellence and luxury in the automobile world.
This example can be applied to the way we look at the Crucifix. It can certainly be seen as a symbol of our salvation and our eternal life as Bro. Kuttikkattu states in his article. But in my humble opinion and based on the Word of God this will be undermining the importance of the Crucifix in our spiritual life. Had it been just a “my opinion only” issue, I would have ignored it. But since I am a staunch defender of the Word of God and the Crucifix, I am compelled to advance all the reasons why the Word of God gives much more importance to the Crucifix than Bro. George has given in this article. The way I understand it, in Jn. 3:14 when Jesus says: “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life”, Jesus meant more than just the physical manner in which the Son of Man must be raised up. Here what I mean is that on the Cross, there should be the image of Jesus which is what makes a Crucifix a Crucifix unlike the ‘Claver Cross’. Jesus must have also meant that the intended purpose also should be similar to the way Moses used the image of the serpent. The intended purpose was to give life to those Israelites who were dying from snake bites which they experienced when they murmured against God. Thus it is clear here that Jesus wants us to use the Crucifix erected in our churches to be used by us first to revive our spiritual life and then secondly to strengthen our eternal life. If we choose not to use it this way, that will be like one using a Cadillac to raise chickens instead of using it as a luxurious way vehicle to transport people which is the intended purpose of the Cadillac.
Let me try to make my point by substantiating using some Biblical passages. For example, in Heb. 5:8-9 we read: “Although He was a son, He learned obedience from what He suffered and, once made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him …” In v. 8 the author of Hebrews describes how the Crucifix is a picture of how Jesus learned obedience. And verse 9 is an invitation for us to imitate Jesus in obeying Him and God in everything even if that means going through a real crucifix experience. Thus Jesus becomes a source of life when we obey Him in everything prescribed in the Word of God including what He is asking us to do in Jn. 3:14. In Jn. 1:12 we read: “To all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” Here also, it is clear that Jesus tells us that when we receive Him (by obeying His Word), we receive divine life by becoming the children of God. Thus, the Crucifix becomes a source of salvation for us when we choose to obey Jesus by obeying what He asks us to do Jn. 3:14.

Let me take one more passage to make my point that by obeying Jn. 3:14 the Crucifix becomes our source of salvation. In 1 Pet. 1:23 Peter writes: “You have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring Word of God.” Thus when we obey Jn. 3:14 which is a portion of the imperishable seed (the Word of God), we are re-born as God’s children. Before we make a commitment to obey the Word of God in its entirety, we are worldly people with no difference between us and the pagans. But after we make the commitment, we become the children of God which simply means that our status is totally changed from a “child of so-and-so” to that of a “Child of God.” This point in time is what we call our salvation when we become free from the wrath of God as described in Eph. 2:11-13.
Now let us see how the Crucifix becomes a source of eternal life for us. Here also we should bear in mind that the serpent that Moses erected on a pole in obedience to the command of God became a source of physical life for whoever looked at the serpent. Our situation is also not much different in the application of the Crucifix in our spiritual life. In Dt. 8:3 God tells us “that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mount of the LORD.” Thus when we continue to obey Jn. 3:14 which has become the basis for the Crucifix, we are living spiritually everyday in the way God wants us to live. As we see on Malayalam TV in the commercials for ‘Complan’ we as spiritual children gain strength, muscle, stature and everything else that is associated with growth in a spiritual sense when we venerate the Crucifix and defend it from its enemies such as the ‘Claver fanatics’ of today. Each time we put up a fight to bolster the position of the Crucifix in our churches, we are making a renewed commitment to obey Jesus’ command in Jn. 3:14. By this we become spiritually healthier and healthier. In other words, we become the opposite of കാലുകള് ചത്തുമരവിച്ച വെറും തവളകള്.
On the other hand, when we choose to remain indifferent when our Bishop Angadiath or any other Bishop in the Syro-Malabar Church removes a Crucifix and replaces it with the infamous ‘Mar Thoma Cross’, we become disobedient children of God. And disobedience always brings God’s judgment and consequential curses on us as God warns us in Dt. 28:11-68. The present maladies and predicament currently plaguing the Syro-Malabar Church of today are nothing but the evidence of God punishing the Syro-Malabar Church in the way He has already warned us in Dt. 28:11-68. We must start looking at the Crucifix in a new way different from what we have been accustomed to so far in our past life. We must give it the importance that the Crucifix rightfully deserves by treating it not only as a source of salvation but also as a source of eternal life. Until we do this, we will be like a cave man using a Cadillac for raising chickens because he is ignorant of the real purpose for which the Cadillac was manufactured. Unfortunately in our Syro-Malabar Church of today, there are too many of us acting like cave men ignoring the importance of the Crucifix. What is even more unfortunate is that the Syro-Malabar Church leaders are at the top of the list.
